Home Made Sand Scoop

Here is my version of solmers ideal.

Silverware drainer from IKEA its stainless steal, 4 1/2 inches wide X 7 inches deep, and an old piece if conduit pipe I had laying around.

I cut the drainer to the shape I liked, the bolt is to take the flex out it is thin stuff.

I then took a hammer to the pipe to flatten and bend to desired angle, the black stuff is electrical tape for cosmetics. From the bend to the tip is 37 inches.

Attach handle to drainer, I drilled to holes in the flattened pipe and used the existing holes in the drainer.

As stated before this stuff is thin so I took the piece that I cut out and slid it inside for a little reinforcement. You can see that here if you look close you can also see my mess up when I thought about enlarging the holes in the bottom.

The finished scoop!

I took it to a sand pile I have out in the yard and got pretty rough with it, through grass roots and all, I have to say I am impressed.

Total cost......not sure yet, never been to IKEA and messed up and brought the wife who had never been to IKEA!:look::blink::lol:

Constructive Criticism, and with all do respect, be sure you have lots of Patience with these kinds of scoops. They are great looking, but you might as well set down and enjoy your lunch while the sand slowly trickles out, like an hour glass. Now if you cut the bottom out and install a piece "plumbers cloth" that's coarse enough that dimes just won't go through, you'll have something. Don't take this as a slap in the face, but I've had scoops made like this and especially in sand that is a little damp you'll play hell getting it through that scoop. Pretty though!

Check out capajo's scoop. That thing should just TEAR though sand. You could just almost leave your detector at home and rip up the beach with that scoop!

I agree its good for digging and thats about it, even in the powder it takes a while for the sand to fall out. But if you can't afford to spend $125 plus on a scoop its great!

Yep, I'm with you. Its not that I can't afford to spend $100-150+ on a scoop. I just don't want to. Call me a tightwad if you want, but some of the prices I have seen on online scoops is really unreal. I used to work at a custom ventilation factory, I made stainless steel ventilation's hood for food chain restaurants. SS is expensive, especially hospital grade, but not as much as it reflects in some scoop prices I see.

I think you have a pretty good idea here OP. If I can find one, I think I will drill more holes in the bottom or add a piece of screen in the bottom like Capajo used in his scoop, but add bracing for the screen if you are using it wading.

How can I find out what Capajo's scoop looks like?

Never mind I found it!!! Thanks
