Hollow copper ring ?

I found this copper ( brass ? ) metal ring about 3-4" down in my backyard. I was using an MXT with 6x10 DD and it gave me a solid VDI of 20 and locked on in both directions. As I was pretty certain I had a nickel in my sights, if not a gold ring, I was a little disappointed when I pulled this out. Upon further inspection I realized that it was still an interesting find even if I had no idea what it is. The house I live in was built around 1870's-1880's I'm told but had a major remodel in the 1980's. the original 1-story house was jacked up to the 2nd floor and a new first floor was built beneath. To say there's a lot of construction debris is an understatement. The ring itself looks to be made of copper, 1-1/8" in Dia. and is hollow. Very, very light approx 1 g. It looks pretty aged with a nice green/brown patina. I have several theories as to what it might have been but I'm interested to know what all of you think. Especially if someone has dug and identified one of these before. Thanks.

Are there any marks where a chain could've attached, or a string. May have been attached to something as a pull. (light switch, stopper for a drain, or part of a curtain rod assembly) just a guess.

I have found a few of those myself. If the same as mine you can see a seam on the inside diameter. My guess was that they were part of a horse bridle but not sure if they were hollow or not. Hope someone has an answer.

Now that I think about it maybe ronaldj2's suggestion is a better possibility. I don't think that a hollow ring for a horse bridle would be sturdy enough for that purpose.

For my money, now that I think about it, I'd have to think you're probably right gogogopher. A washer/gasket that crushes and seals when a nut is tightened against it, I'm just a dumb carpenter though so I'm not familiar with them personally. Being as light as it is the only other thing I can think of would be ornamental or, like ronald suggested, as a pull but theres no marks or points of attachment. Thanks for the input.

Hi, If you very carefully inspect the outer edge you may find evidence of where a much smaller ring was once attached, (say a 1/4" or so ring), as i believe it to be a late 19th/early 20th century curtain ring. I've dug many similar to this myself.

Hi Marty. I couldn't see any definite signs of where another ring was attached but a couple of possible attachment points. The aging and patina on it look to be pretty old but I can't say for certain either way whether it might be from the 80's construction or if it is much older. If it's newer I'd go with gogogophers idea and if it is a lot older, I would think your guess might be right on. Thanks for the input.

Brass ring from a merry go round.... Get the ring and get a free Kewpy doll or a free ride...

No real clue

An unused one too. Most of the ones I find have been squashed.

When I find those I always think they came from a tarp, tent, luggage, or some kind of fabric eye. I would think that a gasoline engine sparkplug crushring is much smaller than a quarter, larger engines run on diesel and they don
