Holiday Finds

I went to visit my parents in El Paso for the holidays. I asked my dad to take me to an old city park so I could show him how my detector works. Within a couple of minutes of turning on the detector, I picked up a 1947 Wheat. A couple sweeps later I got a real good silver sound and asked my dad to dig it. About 5" down, out pops a 1921 Morgan dollar in excellent condition. My dad was amazed and I was very excited about finding my first Morgan. Thinking I might have found a hotspot, I start covering the area real slowly. I started finding clad quarters, dimes and pennies. I decided my dad need to try so I handed over the detector and showed him how it works. He started hunting and found a few quarters and pennies. He then gets a good signal and asks me to listen to it. I told him it sounded like silver. I dig about 4" down and out comes a 1923 Peace dollar. You should have seen the look on his face. We continued to hunt for another hour and half (switching back and forth between swinging and digging) and picked up more clad as well as the silver St. Christopher and the silver ring. Needless to say, my dad kept talking about metal detecting all weekend. I told him that I would purchase a backup detector and bring it with me the next time he and I get together. I have to admit, as exciting as it was to find these nice coins, what made it special was finding them with my dad. Merry Christmas to me!!

Thats awesome. You know for as deep as those were a good little machine to get your Dad is the 250. A lot of machine packed in an afordable yellow Box. Nothing wrong with starting simple. He would have the time of his life and youguys would be chatting all the time. Glad you had the time with your Father.

Great finds. I think its great your dad getting a silver dollar right off. He's Hooked. I lived in EL Paso from 1960 to 1965. "AIR FORCE" When you get back down there check and see if the old Air Force base is open to hunting. should be some good finds there. It was open for a lot of years. There are some great tale's of lost treasure in that area. I looked for some of them but didn't have any luck. The new detectors make a lot of difference.

Just kidding Bluesman. I'm really quite jealous. That's gotta be a thrill. I dug what I thought was a silver dollar not too long ago. Same size and color about 5" at an old farm. It was a Reader's digest token. I knew it felt too light when I pulled it out of the ground, but I guy can dream right? Twenty minutes later, I dug my first silver dollar. No, guess again. Another wretched Readers digest token. You'd think I'd learn. The thing about these is they have this heraldic eagle on the back (in fact one had the eagle on both sides) and they looked just right. Someday. Those are great finds Bluesman and you got to share the moment with your dad. Roy's right, your dad's hooked. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.

Yeah, I think Dad got bit by the BUG bigtime & probably recieved a good dose of detectoritis...and IF he did I'm not sure a 250 would be enough medication to keep him stable...

That could be true. The reason I mentioned that machine is its a lot of machine for the money and we don't know if Dad will use it once or a thousand times. But if Bluesman is looking for a backup and is going to let Dad hang onto it thats a different matter.:detecting:

The 250 is supposed to be a fine detector...I even thought of getting one for my brother...he had a stroke a couple years back, then his old lady doubled the mortgage, bought a brand new chevy avalanche 4X4 on credit & took off for Niagra Falls N.Y.:rofl:I told him BEFORE he married her, what type of person she was..anyway he's o.k. but a little technically challenged right now...I still may do it but am maybe thinking an old eagle ll SL or eagle spectrum off ebay...I'll figure it out....should be a whole lot of detectors up for sale shortly with the passing of the holidays...

Thanks for all your comments. Actually, I was planning on trying an Ace250 out this weekend. One of my detecting partners picked one up a couple of weeks ago. He said I could give it a try on Saturday. If it performs well and is easy to use, then I will probably pick one up.

PS. Rolling Stone, if I'm lucky he will play a little "Texas Flood" for me!!!

Finding 2 Silver Dollars is unbelievable in a Park and what is so great about it was that you shared the experience with your father. You may have just got him hooked in this great hobby of ours and it is always great to do some bonding with family when possible. Congrats to you and your dad on both of your first Silver Dollars and I hope you find a few more Silver at that Park when you return together. Congrats, Good Luck and HH.
