Got my Explorer XS yesterday and was doing some quick airtests getting used to this fine machine once again. I noticed something interesting switching between "conductive" and "ferrous" sounds. In "ferrous", I got different tones for each upper end coin. For instance, a seperate tone for a silver dime, copper penny, silver quarter, zinc penny. In "conductive", all these tones are the same except they read different on the screen. I don't know about you guys but I'm hunting in ferrous just for the simple reason I get more auditory info. Plus in heavy iron, it's the only way to fly, in my opinion. Just thought I'd share that in case no one had noticed but I'm sure you guys all knew anyway. When I used the Explorer last time, I always hunted in ferrous so I didn't even know the differences existed since I rarely hunted in conductive and never compared the two back to back. Live and learn...HH George

Hey George,
I'll have to get my XS out and experiment with Ferrous tones. I know what conductive tones sound like because I have used them for the last 200 or so hours. It will be interesting to see how the machine reacts in Ferrous mode. My goal is to be able to use the Ferrous tones and a real low iron mask setting to hunt in heavy iron areas. This seems to be what lots of people say to do.
With my machine in Conductive Mode, and Variability 8, and limits 10, I can hear a difference between an IH (little higher than pulltab), wheatie (higher than IH), silver dime (higher than wheatie), and silver quarter (higher than silver dime). Although for simplicity, I ignore differences between coins and just figure if the tone is higher than pulltab, I dig it (I'm too lazy to dig all the pulltabs I come across for now). The only time I think about the tonal differences between coins is if I am playing with my X1 probe by getting myself excited when I am near a target that sounds like a coin. I like to swipe a silver dime infront of the probe to see if the mystery target has a lower pitch than the silver dime or not. If the mystery target has the same pitch or a little higher pitch than the dime, I fantasize that the mystery target might be a silver coin and enjoy the suspense.
