Hmmmm coin depth:unsure:

What I want to know is when I'm detecting an old house, how do the old coins move around under the ground so I can't find them but the modern coins let me find them.
??????
Greg in Michigan

Hmmmmm, this i know "sponge theory" take a dry sponge pour water on it ,the sponge opens up and expands twice the size,so does the ground so coins drop to a certain level when the ground retains water its opens up inside thus the coins move to different levels in the ground. Now lets say it starts getting hot and all moister is gone the ground tightens up and starts squeezing the soil thus the coin should move up again.I think that's why you can go over the same area time and time again and still find a coin .

say they find coins at super deep depths. Often I think it is in the side of the hole and eventually gets knocked into the bottom.

Mike, I think you're right. Many times I dug a deep hole only to find the coin in the side of the hole or the side of the plug.
