Hit The Woods Late This Afternoon.....Question?

I hit the woods for about 1 1/2 hours late this afternoon. I found a nice pewter love heart (on Valentines day yet) and a knife made out of brass. Why brass or copper?......there are no markings of any kind. I notices some scratches from digging it up and the metal underneath was a bright yellow-orange color. Does anybody have any idea why a knife could be made out of a soft alloy?

Looks like an old Army mess knife or from a mess kit from back in the early 1900's. I have a pocket knife I found years ago that looks to be made of bronze.
