Hit the old ball park again...

Bowie

New member
but I dont think its that old even tho the bleachers and canopy is wooden. Rained this am, and finally got out around 2 pm. Took the M6 and XL Pro, both with 5.3 coils mounted. I would work an area with the 6 and mark targets that I thought were coins and go back over the area again with the XL Pro. I have to say the Pro did very well under these bleachers. I dug old,new style tabs and screw tops. I then swapped up and hit an area first with the Pro then the 6. Everything I dug was 2 inches or less. Disappointed,no older coins. Then I got a signal on the Pro and target depth was around 7 inches, I sized it up and it was coin size, meter pointing to penny. Got the M6 and scanned that target and it wouldnt identify it , got readings from pull tab to penny. However when I hit the VCO,it came up coin size and 7 inches deep. I dug a penny,1965, and it was 5 to 6 inches. I use the blade on my Lesche as sort of guide line for depth.
Ive noticed the Pro goes thru batteries much faster than the M6. I may check into some rechargables, lol.
It was a good afternoon hunt. Suppose to be all sunshine tomorrow.

Bowie:

You had fun and gave us all a run down on a side to side comparison of two very good machines..It seems the Pro is still top dog from your post.Is that about right ??

Heya Elton, underneath the bleachers the common trash was the pull tabs, aluminum bits and screwcaps. Many iron signals also. I was just tickled that the Pro worked well in this environment, plus, I was able to use the Disc mode. Yep, I like it. I now need to do a bit of research on rechargable batteries and chargers, that Pro seems a bit hungry.

Heya Tinfoil, I think Im gonna head back to the park tomorrow and wanna try the Sat mode out. If I recall correctly, the XL Pro in the Sat mode can be swept a bit slower. Thanks for reminding me of that. The Pro is a very fun machine to use.
I downloaded a lot of post by you and several others on the Pro. I read over those post after each outing with the Pro. To bad that machine isnt made anymore.
I have a question if you dont mind.
When I am in the disc mode and squeeze the trigger going to GEB Norm to pinpoint, size up a target and get a depth reading, at times, even on a coin, I get a very large target signal, much larger than a coin. I have to ratchet down to get a better sizing on my target. Could this larger signal be caused by a different closer target?
Thanks,
John

tab-nabit, I really would like some rechargables with a good charger. Could you recommend a good brand and a good charger. Do they make a charger that will charge 8, AAs at the same time?? I just got back from Wally world, bought a big pack of AA Enegizer, I think it was 10 bucks. That Pro went thru that fresh set pretty quick. Im really inexperienced with this, but Ive read, just cant recall where, that you can purchase some brands of rechargables that are better than Whites rechargables. But please correct me or help me out because I want to get whats good for my machines.
Thanks very much,
John

Swing off the targets or targets re-pull the trigger off to the side and in the air to get rid of your detuned target. Now go back over it with the trigger pulled in Norm and raise the coil and try to isolate the target or targets. You could have multi. targets at various depths. Put it in Sat. Mode and you can move around slower and it will ID lock on the targets even when you raise the coil. You must Isolate it or them. Ratchet pinpointing/ detuning or as we old guys call it Double Clutching works great on single targets but not multi. targets close together. It gets confusing that is why you have to see if you have more then one target. Lifting the coil or going to the Sat. mode will help you isolate the targets. That is the way I do it. That is a excellent way to find coin spills.

Monte hangs around on here maybe he will show up and give a few tips also. He has a lot of time on the 6000 XLPRO. Way more time on it then I have.

You know of coarse you can put it in the GB Norm mode if you need a faster sweep ID. The 6000XLPRO will ID in Norm mode ,SAT mode, Dis mode, TR mode and setting the TR mode to ID in Mineralized ground which is a super slow sweep speed if you can't get any depth in the TR mode and are in mineralized ground. I think that is on Page 28 of your manual. Like you, my 6000 XLPRO will always have a home with me. I just wished I could get a Double D coil for it. Like one of the Excellerator coils which I really like. Any size would be OK with me. Hope this helps. :D: :D: Later Jerry aka Tinfoil.

I sent you a PM for info regards to batteries and chargers - but to answer some of your question:
I use NiMh rechargeable batteries like:

Because I was buying in 100 packs like:

Which between me and rest of family can quickly turn into:

Dont even get me started, my car goes thorough them AA's like crazy!! :) HH

lol, ok, you guys win, im no way in same class with you. I dont need that many AAs.
But,RobRcr, could you give me the low down on what type battery and charger you use??
Thanks,
John

Humm, that sounds like a model (naturally I'm biased. :) ) that has a bit more horsepower or versatile performance.

To get to some of my ghost town sites and other old desert and/or mountain locations, I prefer to own and use a 4x4 of some type, or something with decent ground clearance and a little muscle. (XL Pro)

I might complain that that rig might burn a tank of gas faster, but that wouldn't persuade me to (a) opt for a more fuel-efficient rig, or (b) convert over to some bio-fuel just to shave a few cents per gallon.

If you're using good headphones (I prefer Killer B 'Wasp' or SunRay Pro Gold), that can help extend your battery life. Make sure you're using only alkaline batteries that are not dated (old). I buy mine at Costco, choosing their Kirkland brand of AA alkaline. A box of 48 is something like $9.89 so the coast to fill the 8-AA battery tray is only $1.65. Using headphones I get decent battery life out of an XL Pro or XLT. Not nearly as long as the 55-70 hours run-time of my modified IDX Pro, but I'd guess it's in the 15-20 hour range. I haven't monitored it fo quite some time, but that's a close guess.

At $1.65 a fill-up, that makes a cost of about 8

I use a Duracell charger, in AA size i got 1,700 and 2,300 mAh batteries. I also have AAA's that are 1,000 mAh.

Takes some time to charge car up doing 4 at a time. I feel sorry for whoever actually owns that car. They must have a charger the size of a table.

Robert

P.S. Other 2 batteries are in camera, just charged em up.

Sounds that maybe some of the fellas were not properly prepared. High rate mAh gives me long run times. And I always carry a spare set ready to go when needed. I'll get a few hunts easily out of a set and change out before needed with a fresh set, this prevents having to change them during a hunt. I can't remember the last time I had a set peter out during use.
I also have a cigarette lighter plug-in charger but I haven't had a situation where I needed it yet.
My cameras gave me very short time on alkaline (less than 30 shots) so i tried the rechargeable NiMh and the difference was so much better that I have been using them in other applications other than my cameras.
I see and have no problems using alkaline, it's just I haven't had any problems at all using NiMh rechargeable.

I now have some food for thought. Like many of you I have other devices that use the AA size batteries. We go thru a lot of them. I have researched a bit and it seems the newer NiMhs have a pretty good life after the intitial break in of four or five charges. We dont have a Costco,Best Buy in our small town, we have Radio Shack but Radio Shacks selection of rechargables didnt impress me.
Went back to the ball park today and found a bit more clad. Gonna hit a beach or two on the river tomorrow, couple places where all the skiers, pleasure boat users and houseboats congregate.
Thanks very much for your help,
HH and Happy New Year,
John
PS Monte, I have one of those gas loving 4 wheel drives, lol. Its been many years since Ive been without one but I understand what you mean, it takes more gas but its worth it.

gets my vote too!..the combo of the (s.a.t) mode coupled with the nasty 5.3 is outstanding in trash!

I use Energizer rechargable batteries in my XL Pro. 2500's. I got them at walmart with a quick charger that has both car and home plugs. Charges in 4 batteries in 10 minuites. Hav'nt had an issue with them yet. Been using them over a year now. Have 2 battery packs and 16 recargeable batteries. Just charge them up before I go out. Plus with the car charger you can charge them up anywhere.

Thats interesting, thanks Steve M.
I am curious tho, on something, and have to admit Im a big dummy so feel free to educate me.
The large 6 volt battery the guy pryed open had 32 (looked like AA) batteries inside. If the large battery was rated at 6 volts, what would the volt rating on each of those individual batteries add up to?? or what is the volt of each individual cell??
Thanks,
John

Bowie - batteries in series the voltages add - positive to negative - gives more voltage.
Batteries in parallel the voltage stay the same but the Amp-Hour rating now adds up.
Batteries can now be in a series-parallel combination to get up to a set voltage and then give longer run time for the ones inserted in parallel.

Two 1.5 volt batteries:
Series - positive to negative, end to end - 3 volts.
Parallel - positive to positive, and negative to negative, 1.5 volts but about double the run time.
