Went out hunting on last Saturday for an all day hunt a various spots and parks in the area.

Found this on the SURFACE in the woods. Didn't even have to dig, just brushed away the brush and leaves and there he was.

12-43 on the CTX. Running Ferrous Coin Open Combined Mode.

1740 King George II Half Penny

Congrats on that great find. Wonder what kept something that old, up on the surface? Looks like it would have been down deep, doesn't it? Nice job.

Amazing surface find - if I could only know the story about that one! Huge congrats on breaking into the 18th century!

I do a lot of woods searching and I've seen how shallow some of the old coins can be. One IH penny was laying on top of the soil, I was able to see it just by moving the leaves away with my shoe. Some old coins are at normal depths, some are really shallow. Many really old shotgun shells (the brass part) are on top of the soil, some sink 3-5".

Those earthworms knew you were coming and gave that coin a lift.. I found a similar coin ~ 1739 George II halfpenny, in a NY park (filled with mostly modern trash) at 5 inches. Go figure.

that is why I never use depth to determine if I will dig or not,,,, WTG !!!!!
