Hit Jackpot! 4 and 1 Reales

These Spanish Cobs came from the New World of Mexico, Peru and Bolivia. Unlike shipwreck coins these prized coins are of full weight. The word "cob" comes the Spanish phrase, "Cabo de Barra", which means "made from the end of a bar". The bar was 92% to 98% silver, which was poured into thin strips. The strips were pounded flat and then cut into coin blanks. The blanks were then impressed on both sides with the coin design. The coin was then trimmed on corners to bring it to the standard weight. The process of hand striking and cutting to weight means that no two coins are alike. Because of being hand struck by slaves who evidently were not concerned with quality control, much of the design, legend, and dates are often missing. The design of each coin features the Great Shield of Hapsburg on the obverse. While the reverse shows the Crusader's Cross.
