Historic artifacts pull-tab

sube

Well-known member
In my state all land controlled by the DNR is off limits to metal detecting because the head of the DNR is a archaeologist which is not elected to office by people vote he is elected by board members.
So I can't water detect , all water ways and lakes are controlled by the DNR and what ever land they control .

So for me to detect say a lake I need a permit to hunt if I lost something and can only hunt the area I lost something in .
As far as artifacts anything older than 50 years is a artifact
So the pull-tab has become a artifact now came out in 1965.

If you find a memorial penny 1965 or older you have to turn it in by law if found on DNR land if given a permit to hunt for a lost item on DNR land or water.
I though DNR land belong to the people but I guess I am wrong .:sadwalk:
Anyhow this just s@#*s but has been this way for I think 5 years.

So I got to thinking I am go to save up all my historic artifacts pull-tabs and mail them to the DNR headquarters at the end of the year and write on the box historic artifacts fragile and see what happens,

What state are you in? I have read that 50 years thing applies in floriduh.

There was an interesting article about this I saw the other day (pull tabs now considered an artifact) I posted it on another forum and people had fun discussing it..

At 50, Ring-Tab Beer Cans Are Now Officially Historic Artifacts

This is a true example of people who have too much time on their hands (referring to those to making these types of rules). It appears that these groups of people, whether archaeologist, EPA, ... truly have nothing to do but sit around and make up new rules. In Kentucky, we are now hearing that if you find an arrow head, you should report it to the University of Kentucky. Many are concerned as they believe that it will lead to some type of protective order of the property because of the archaeological significance and people (maybe even the owner) may not be able to plow the field much less collect the arrow heads. I applaud the author of the article that was published and the focus of a 50 yr old pull tab. Oh well, didn't mean to rant, and I did get a great chuckle... HH

This SO reminds me of that episode of the detectorists where they had a table labeled "Pulltabs Thru the Ages" or something like that.

This sounds a little like Indiana. I don't know that we have the fifty year rule for artifacts but with the exception of state beaches (with a permit) all DNR properties and DNR governed entities are completely off limits. It has been several years since I read it but we even have to be mindful of digging where artifacts are concerned. We are allowed surface finds and incidentals but you absolutely don't want to get caught or accused of purposefully digging for them.

It will only get worse. I hear now that the Italian government has declared all Roman coins property of the state regardless of where found. One exception was if you can prove it being a part of a collection for some period of time.

Screw them and the hat they are wearing! Screw permits!

We are free men to walk the Planet and do what we please!

Old guys get a pass...we are 'grandfathered in' I figure...we are the good guys, we aint hurting anybody and most likely help all sorts of folks with their lives and problems, let alone picking up the amount of trash we do.hell, picking up and properly disposing just one broken bottle bottom saved Somebodies day you know!.....aint none of us gonna get cuffed and stuffed for a pulltab!.

Up here its now been deemed 'illegal' to smoke on the beach, and lots of other things too...but I do anyway, screw them and their aforementioned hat!...too much of this stuff to fight or waste our short time on!....I love that whole 'detectorists' series by the way!
