Hip or chest mounted Excal II?

Fire Fighter 43

Active member
What do you prefer a hip or chest mounted Excal II and why? Im new to water hunting and Im just getting my equipment set-up so any advice would be appreciated.

Either one will put extra stress on the coil wire eventually causing a failure. As a firefighter U should have no trouble hunting an excal on a straight shaft all day & save $$ and down time on repairs

It's all up to the individual ....I have my Excal chest mounted and have my coil wire tied off on the harness that I made so there is no movement at the coil wire / control box intersection .....The only thing that will be moving is about 4 ft of coil wire .... Jim

erikk is right i hip mount my xcal2 and less than a year old battery wire and the headphones wire ckracked ....lucky me it is still under warenty and i won't have to pay but 2 month with out my xcal2 is a pain in the a@##$

erik do you use the waterproof connectors on your excals? I think you use coils other than the WOT? if so which ones do you use and do you have any problems with them? Ive seen the coiltek ones and the belkin ones.

I was just out with mine today:thumbup:

I keep mine on a whites rod I modded but I will chestmount my Sov occasionally if my Excal isnt with me.

Coiltek WP on 1, hardwire on #2 & stock 10 on #3 till warranty runs out and then either hardwire or Coiltek WP connector. Although I CAN change coils I use the WOT exclusively. WP connector is in case one coil goes south I can just add another. I use them hard and long and I know they will eventually fail

Which swings to & fro & will eventually fail

Yes in deed. I just fixed mine about 3 weeks ago for just that problem. It was an older BBS coil and probably had a ton of hours on it.

I figure with all the gold and diamonds I will be finding , the least I can do is buy my Excal a new cable and maybe even another coil !!.....Jim

that is a clean setup Bling, is that the one plugger sells?

I think that the one that Plugger sells is more of a support strap, and mount that goes around the chest ....Looks like Blings mounts lower on the waste .......I made one that connects like suspenders around the waste like a betl and suspenders , but has a strap that goes across the upper chest to mount the control box ...My control box sits between my breast and my large round MUSCULAR area below my breast !!....LOL !!!...... Jim

ok i gotta chime in on this, i have both of pluggers assys, hip mount and chest mount,i use my excalibur 2 1000 allot in all kinds of hunting conditions,im also a electronics tech for my self so i tend to take care of my equipment but with that aside,i love the chest mount assy for the beach and walking around in the fields, ive not had any wire breakage concerns at all,i can say i was one of the first to have the chest assy from plugger,it does make a huge difference if your out walking the beaches all day as i do,
just were whats best for you....and i do have his 3 piece straight shafts too,so i can bounce back n forth with ease if i wanted too,but i do prefer the chest assy..

its Plugger strait shaft and Plugger belt but its a Minelab 5000 battery harness .i like it on my back as i use the Swingy Thingy bunji cord to take away coil weight and clipped it the front of the vest and would be too much weight all on the front pulling forward if i had the detector tube on the front also.very easy to use.take right hand ,reach behind you ,take 2nd knob turnes it on and sets threashold and start swinging!

now another thing to think about is the ampp/disc switch??? i have my excal modded with mel parkers hand grip mod for this so i have this switch on my hand grip no reaching for the switch in front or behind or reaching the control on the shaft either,so useing the hip mount assy or chest assy i dont have to worry about those controls...works great for me..
