high trash sites

Now that I am finally able to beat the 7 inch depth barrier, Id like some advice on how to deal with lots of iron/trash. Chris as well as others had mensioned that finding coins in trash is a more important issue than raw depth, and now that I have more experiance, virtualy every site that I find the really old coins at has a ton of trash.

I have found that I need to slow way down with my swing and only progress forward about an inch or two at a time. I've tried lowering the sensitivity and using the fast option and that seems to improve things. Ive tried using the audio 1 option and I must be missing somthing. all it does is blend the signals together and desensitize my hearing with the constant sound. In dry conditions Ive had some luck with finding silver masked by iron by cranking up the sensitivity to 30. i dont know how or why that helps, but it has been successfull in the dust. I made a discrimination pattern that cuts out all but the top left corner of iron signals, foil, pulltabs and crown caps. normaly I run wide open IM-16, but i can swich to that screen when I start getting audio information overload.I probably miss a few but by swiching back on iffy ones, I probably dont miss much.

Mike from the dealership where I bought my machine got me to start thinking 'when in doubt, dig it out'. I had gotten myself into the habit of only digging things that had to be a coin. Now I try to only not dig what I'm certain is junk. I want to leave a site with my arms tired from digging holes, my junk bag full of trash, my pockets with a few relic type non-coin keepers, and hopefully no evidence that I had ever been there in the first place.

So I'd like some advice from all you fellow junkyard dogs if your willing to give up your secrets.

Todd,Cody posted a very good trash program.March 7,2005.It has been working very well for me,Instead of conduct sound,I have been using the ferrous sounds as he mentioned, and when you try this set-up,you can pull that silver or button tone right apart from that trash!I use this at most of my trashy sites very slowly and every possible angle, even the minelab-wiggle on the if-fies,just to here if it's solid enough to go for.I have a slight variation, meaning I set my gain at 6,and very between manual and semi-auto,depends on how bad the site is.Good-luck,Todd,try to keep it simple and most of all keep it FUN!HH,Rick

I agree with what Crow is saying; I use Ferrous and run wide open at -16 or -15. I get a lot of iron that way (the 31 31 readings if you're into checking that screen) obviously but it really does help to find the goodies. Also use a smaller coil than stock; depending on conditions the 8" coil is great and even the 5" coil has its places to shine. Hit it from every angle like Crow said. Be patient and double check everything.

Doing this stuff should get you some more goodies out of the trash.

Thankyou to both of you for the tips and support. like anything worth doing, it takes patience and practice, I agree. Any aditional tips are welcome. And I also have to agree with crow about enjoying the smell of the fresh cut grass, and the breeze on the hot days. thats what makes the most fruitless hunts still enjoyable! I was hunting with a guy who was trying real hard to find a deep signal for me last year. It was a cold rainy crappy day and we hadnt found much when he got a pretty good signal. before long he unearthed a coin shaped object. he rubbed the dirt off, then he started belly laffing and handed it to me. It was a token with a goat on it and it said "I got your goat!!" Hillarious. so your right about not taking this too seriously!
