High Pitch Threshold

tcp

Member
I have been trying to use 'Pitch Hold' for the last several hunts. When a good target is detected I get a good high pitch sound which you would expect. However, sometimes I do not get the high pitch sound but the threshold sound changes to a high pitch for a moment. By threshold, I mean the sound that the detector makes between targets, not the actual sound a target would make. I was wondering if anyone else that hunts in 'Pitch Hold' has the same experience. Could a deep coin make the threshold change to a high sound? If so, how would you locate the target if it only changes the threshold pitch and does not give off the usual coin sound? Thanks for your comments.

1. Yes, absolutely can be a deep coin. (Can also be iron falsing.)

2. Switch to Pinpoint mode (with pinpoint trace on). Carefully sweep the spot while painting the targets on the screen and listening for faint signals....especially one that sounds small/tight. See if a blob starts to appear on the screen in the coin region.

That's really the primary purpose of 'Pitch Hold'...to locate those faint ones you just went over, but might have missed otherwise.

Very well said Mike.

I believe pitch hold was originally a Sovereign feature. The threshold pitch would rise or fall to match the target just swept over with the coil. Beach hunters often use the feature as it seems to provide extra depth by the threshold pitch changing even though the target signal was too weak to trigger a full response. When the hunter heard the threshold change, it was time to turn around and investigate.

Rich, if that's you in the video then I apologize for what I'm about to say, but that guy's swing is making me cringe. He's a foot off the ground at the left and right of the swing!
