High Disc level affecting depth ability on F70?

Been using my f70 several months now. Like it. Im reading recommendations to run the disc level at like 20 or less. Does using high levels of disc reduce the depth during operation? Perhaps their are more factors than that. I've routinely use high disc, and yes Im finding coins o plenty but mostly 3' or less. I do Ground Grab and believe Im running it properly otherwise. The deepest I got was a silver quater 8" deep. In the woods sometimes I am shocked at the how deep I will find a tiny, scrub of a nail maybe 1/8 of an inch long at 10-12 inches.

Where you set the disc depends on "you" & your detecting style + what is you are looking for & where. There are variances between detector coil combination's so the following link which is air tests should be viewed with that in mind. Also it's an air test, highly suspect compared to mineralized ground.

If you are a park hunter be careful about listening to where relic hunters tell you to adjust your detector. The noise from the trash will drive you mad.

I used to have this thinking that if I was only finding coins that were shallow that my detector couldn't find the deepies. Chances are that the coins where you are detecting are shallow. If you put the coil over a deeper coin, it'll hit it! (unless it's masked of course).
I'm confident that the F70 CAN find deepies even with higher discrim levels, because the machine can hit them in my test garden. The fact that you're finding those deep, small trashy things proves it as well.

Patience.

Yeah these are not the old-fashioned, analog/progressive DISC detectors of yesteryear. Those instruments gave up some depth when in higher DISC settings. But today's digital instruments don't suffer from that as much - if at all.

Most likely it is as Wayne suggests - you simply cannot find what isn't there. No matter how much we want it, no detector will act as a 'black hole', sucking good targets into sterile ground for us to find. Of course we know that in our hearts, but you sure can't tell it by some of the things we say - or by how much money we are willing to spend on our instruments!

In the main, we fail to remember, (or realize) that detecting as a hobby has been around now for just at 50 years. Back before most of us were even alive, you could choose from dozens of hobby detectors, all capable of finding coins and other goodies. The hobby, itself, has gone through two distinct surges before now, and we are currently in the THIRD. To be honest, we are too late for the easy stuff.

Wayne, Thanks for your input. you know I was hitting a certain park heavy, and I have since decided that given the age of that park, (not an ancient one) all or most of the coins where in the first 3 inches any way. Other recent places Im pulling wheaties and buffalo nickles at 4-6-7". After reading several articles Im might take an afternoon and only dig targets 6" or more deep. This is only an experiament as I know Ive recently found several indian head pennies at 3 inches or less. Hey you never know. The f 70 is a versitile machine. After several months I'm getting more used to it. I did try the all metal mode recently at a cellar whole (1850'S) where I have gotten silver spoons and even a civil war heel plate but never never a coin, and did get a coin. Alas it was in terrible shape, I think its and IH penny. I know its just the draw, Ive found silver jewelry but no silver coins yet. My biggest complaint about the f 70 is the on/off knob. Its like you move it around the trunk just to put in a bag of groceries and it turns itself on, or the wind blows on it and it turns itself on. Im now always keeping extra batteries handy- as Ive gotten to places and found the unit on and the batteries shot when I open the trunk. I am looking into a small velcro stick on dots maybe to increase the frictional resistance from the side, or a small strip I could use to "lock" the knob after I turn it off.

That's funny Os...

My pinpointer has a way of turning itself on. Several times I've been driving and heard this high pitched "weeeeeeeeeeeee", and thought "What the...oh, its the pinpointer" only to have to pull over and turn it off.
