Hi Trash program vs coin/jewelry

Jim Bob

New member
I have only had my V3i for a few weeks and I got hooked on the High Trash program with out really giving the coin/jewelry program a chance because it was noisey. Well yesterday I was searching a grass strip about 12 feet wide and 30 feet long looking for a lost class ring. The ring was lost over 20 years ago and I searched real slow in High trash mode because that is the program I have used the most. I over lapped my swings and spent an hour and a half covering the area and found about 15 coins and some pulltabs. I got a nice low signal at 3 inches but it turned out to be a nickel. Well I decided to try coin/jewelry program, re-ground balenced and to two steps and got a 17-24 vid and a good repeat signal at 4 inches. I cut a plug and right in the bottom of the hole sat the 1967 gold high school ring. You talk about a happy dance, I did one. Now you folks with lots of time in with the V3i may be able to tell me, am I missing some good targets with the high trash mode or maybe I just missed it the first time around. I know I have a lot to learn so I am going back to the place I found the 4 sillver dimes next week and try the coin / jewelry mode again. Any thoughts on what might be lost between the two programs? Thanks Jim

On page 38 of your manual you will see a chart that shows the differences in the programs. In short, the Coin and Jewelry accepts targets from -5 to +94. The high Trash program accepts targets +15 to +25 and +66 to +94 everything else is discriminated out. You still would have found the ring with Hi Trash in this case, but any ring or jewelry +26 to +65 will be discriminated out. I'm sure there are other changes, but I can't think of them right now.

You were lucky your gold ring fell in your accepted range. The C/j would have worked discing out -95 to 0 and maybe the 70 and up range. Also you could turn the disc sensitivity down to 70 to help with small foil, use a smaller coil, and RD down to 45. Rings are big targets and not that deep.

Hi Jim Bob,

Congratulations for finding the ring. Have you had time to return the ring to the owner yet? We want pictures when you do.

The Coin & Jewelry program accepts signals with VDI numbers -5 to +94. High Trash program accepts VDI numbers +15 to +25 & +66 to +94. Your stated VDI number range for the ring was +17 to +24 which does fit in that 15 to 24 notch for the High Trash program. Sometimes when you swing over the same target from different angles, you can get different VDI numbers. Some reasons for this are the angle of the target in the ground and nearby trash items. It is possible that when you swung over the ring in High Trash it read a lower VDI and therefore did not give you an audible signal. It would only have to drop 3 VDI numbers lower to be completely out of the 15 to 25 notch. In fact, target signals start getting raspy when they get close to the edge of accept notches.

To answer your question, yes you will miss a lot more good targets with the the High Trash discrimination pattern than the C&J discrimination pattern. I have found many small silver rings with VDIs in the low 60s. Some Indian Heads read in the mid 50s. Many small gold rings have VDIs in the +10 to +16 range. Fine link gold chains can read in the small negative VDIs. The above targets will not sound off in the High Trash program.

Hope what I wrote made sense.

I went to a park filled with pull tabs.. I mean. LOTS. I put my V3i on high trash because the constant beeps drove me mad. My friend was with me. He had an MXT which he was accepting everything. Long story short. I pulled only a couple of pull tabs, and quite a bit of modern clad. He dug up over one hundred pull tabs, and a 18k women's ring with diamond. I passed the ring over my coil. In high trash mode it disc'd it out. In C & J it came in at +7 to +8 with a solid tone. I use C & J more now..

This is along the line of thought I was reffering to when I used my XLT over the same area I hunted with the V3i in High Trash mode and found a war nickel last week.It is exciting to know the options this machine has to offer but it sure will make you second guess yourself. My guess is the more you work with the V3i the better you will understand it, so I am looking forward to lots of reading these tips from you guys and putting in some swing time. Thanks, Jim

Thanks Bob, There is such a mind game going on when hunting trying to keep up with it all gets a little crazy sometimes. Just like trying to remember the vid numbers of a target when I dig it. After an hour and many targets while I'm digging a target I have toask myself is this a dime ot a quarter vid. If I had not just changed to the C/J program and hit my first target I may not have noticed anything except the solid repeat signal. In H/Trash the nickel tone is unique with its low tone. Any way I did return the ring and have a neat story with the details to post and I was going to put one picture in this post of the plug I dug and the ring but it wouldn't upload, said the file was too big. I have no problem posting on another forum so I have to find out what I am doing wrong. Thanks again to all you guys, JIm

Don't forget to send your story and a picture to White's Bob, there could be a $100 in it for you..........

On pictures, I Email them to myself and chose Medium size and then save. That size works well for me.

Thanks for the picture posting tip, Larry.

I'll have to try that tip on e-mailing myself the pictures, thanks. I just got a $100 cupon from Whites for a story about an ID bracelet I found and returned in the lake with my Beach Hunter ID. It had been in the water over 60 years. The owner passed away in 2000 but his brother was thrilled to get it. I love getting things back to the family when possible. Thanks again, Jim
