When over a target that i’m undecided whether or not to dig i use the horseshoe button and if i get that grunt sound i don’t bother digging am i right or wrong.

Could be right or wrong depending on the signal… these are the type of signals that you really have to focus on while deciding whether to dig or not and takes time to learn what to listen for.
Some of these signals could be a good target next to iron, or coins on edge. Know I have gotten some very crappy signals that turned out to be good targets!!

18K ring that was cracked ... Buddy passed on it did not sound right
Knife that was in a sheath ... Was found in the corner of a tot lot
14K ring on top of the staple in a tot lot

My advice is to dig a few of the targets that you suspect is trash to verify using your horseshoe button method to see . Then mainly focus on the audio . how clean, clear or how crackling, popping it may be. Audio helps me determine what I do and don’t dig . That applies to any detector .
