Found this in a field where I found a few other coins, 3 of which are 1773 Virginia half penny's, a silver coin about the size of a dime with a shield lions and cross on back, front isnt very visible and the last which is a silver coin cut in a pie shape, my friend said its called a reals? But anywho, here is the coin I cannot find out what it is... see if you experts can figure it out for me :) Thanks in advance

Sorry hehe, here it is.. Didnt have much to show since it was a bit erroded off

I've not seen any coin or token anything like that. (Pretty sure there's nothing like it up on http://www.coins.nd.edu/ColCoin/.) I'm thinking it's a button or perhaps a gaming piece. Something other than coinage.

I agree, I sent countless hours looking up coins and such that might resemble it to some degree but had no luck at all. Interesting nonetheless, thanks for your info!

Looks like a button to me. Check the back side in the center for evidence of where a loop was soldered on. If you see nothing at all, then maybe it's a game counter. But it looks like a button to me. Hope this helps. A picture of the back to see if there is any writing (back marks) would also help. Some nice finds for a beginner.

Hi, Just looked at both pictures and think it's a button. But the side we are calling the front is actually the back of the button. The stars are common on backs of buttons, and the letters should say gilt or gild. The eroded side (we called the back) is the front of the button and has no design. Remember this button would have been smooth and shinny gold or silver. What does anyone else think?

Pretty sure it's a flat button !

Sweet, thanks for the help everyone! Its nice to put a face with somthing hehe

Also nicknamed: coin, flat or penny button. They are some of our earliest buttons and all were originally imported from Europe; mostly the UK. Back marks (trade marks) will be found on many and there are countless thousands. Common b/m are: Treble Gilt, Rich Orange Colour, London, ect. Many have no b/m. They usually have a plain face but many will have geometric patterns, flowers (thus the nickname flower button), birds, animals and with military examples, letters: RR (reg't of rifles) LD (light dragoons) US, USA or the early Federal (US) eagle. They are collectable and cover both civilian and military era's.
Good hunting,
David
