Here in Mo. in your youth?
I dug the little 1885 fish scale yesterday evening. How it wound up in a farmers field here in Mo. would probably make a great story.
It was tarnished solid black and unreadable when it came from the ground.I thought it was a half dime until I got it home and knocked a little tarnish from it.....and I found out it IS a half dime!.....Just not the kind I thought it would be!
This is a first for me.I am amazed at how tiny and thin it is.I would think that lots of them had to be lost. Are they a pretty common find up your way?
The silver dollar is for scale.I dug it a couple of years ago. This represents my largest and smallest silver coin finds.

Because they are so tiny, there are quite a few to be found up here. I guess they could fit through almost any hole in a pocket.
Kinda hard to see from the pic but there is a large 5 and a small 5 variety. In G4 condition, they are worth 9 and 10 dollars respectively.
I have pretty complete collection [missing a few key dates] but I do not have your year, Yet!!! In fact, I found a 1906 yesterday in a lake.
I have over 100 of them now. Even the old guy [Royal] found one when he was up here.
all the best

about a dozen years ago. I had just bought a new top of the line Garrett. While detecting near an old lake resort i encountered kind of a garbage hole in some very old growth trees.
I was coming up with all kinds old stuff, and getting a silver signal that i just could not find. After separating all the junk and moving it away to scan, all i had left was an old boot sole that said SILVER! I picked it up disgustedly, muttering unflattering things about Charlie Garrett when i saw the little rascal stuck to the underside of the toe! It was a late 1800's and i was thrilled, you never know and Charlie was off the hook

I have never dug a silver dollar or a "fish scale" for that matter.
I'd be going back to that field.
