But, in order to see it, you need to have clear weather. If your trip of going to the Inside Passage is on rainy days, I'm afraid the gray haze is going to be less spectacular than your brochures predicted! On the other hand, if the weather is clear, you're in for a once in a lifetime treat of drop-jaw beauty.
In my 30 years of living in Alaska, I lived in Juneau for a year. Juneau is the state capital, and third largest populace beside Anchorage and Fairbanks, with approx. 100,000 people, if that. It is a tightly compacted town, nestled closely together on anything that resembles flat ground at the base of a very steep mountain. It is full of interesting shops and things to see. Juneau got its start in the late 1800's when the Kennicott Gold Mine opened up for hard rock mining.
One of the main attractions is the Mendenhall Glacier, approx. ten min. from downtown Juneau. I'm sure your cruise director has scheduled a bus trip for you all out to there. One of my favorite things to do there was to go through the McDonalds drive through, then drive to the Mendenhall Glacier, sit there and eat it. Man, what a view. I'm including a few pictures of the glacier, and three links to some bigger photographs of Juneau and the glacier. I have been all up on the rocks and on the glacier on the right side in the photographs.
I'm afraid you won't find much gold on the beaches, other than Nome. Skagway may have a gold panning "booth" for tourists, where you can actually pan some planted gold. Although Skagway was prominent in the Klondite Gold Rush of 1898, it was predominantly a jump off site for the ships from Seattle.
I hope you and your wife have a wonderful trip. Alaska will always be part of us. I don't think any other place in the world can grab you like Alaska
