When I tell you, you will see that i am a novice! I don't think this was a good idea, but I didn't know any better...

I dropped it in some CLR (cleaner used to remove rust stains and stuff), then rinsed it and scrubbed it with a brass wire brush.

I don't know the proper way to clean coins, but I didn't destroy it (though, again, I probably wouldn't do that again, after reading a bit about cleaning coins). Sometimes, I use a little vinegar, and then brush...
