-I know a lot of wives hunt too. Do you out-hunt your hubby and he won't let you post?

-What are your favorite types of targets you hunt for?

-Ever met a detector guy you didn't like?

-What kind of machine do you swing?

-Any good search ideas from a "women's" prospective?

-Does your husband get angry when you hunt for extended periods, and he has to cook supper?

-Is metal detecting more of a "MAN'S" sport

Okay, Okay!! ... Now that I have the attention of some of the few female form followers, I'll get serious. As a male who has been an avid detectorist for quite some time, I have many experiences for both genders of hobbyists. I have a small 'society' made up of but a handful of folks who enjoy the metal detecting hobby, as equally as they do exploring, researching, and working with historic preservation efforts. They can be Federal, State, or Private in nature. Doing so has afforded more than just an opportunity to do some detecting because the associated research has opened opportunities for us, and the people we work with have opened some doors for many private-access detecting.

What does this have to do with the gender-related question? Plenty, because while we have never seen (nor will we) the equal involvement of men and women in this hobby, in some circles it comes close. My organization is presently comprised of almost an equal number, perhaps a 60%/40% split of Men/Women. As a founder or co-founder of three clubs, and a member of a few others, I note that some have more women involved than others. But the percentage of women who attend a monthly meeting is greater than the percentage who go out on club-member outings where they actually do any detecting. Those that do are usually quite involved and intent of their hunting success, but the numbers just aren't there. Very few females of the "club group" are single, from my observations, and many, or most, of the married gals seem to have more desire to sit at a meeting than swing a detector on an outing. No, not all, but I look at percentages and numbers.

Personally, of my own "Top 10 Favorite Hunting Buddies" the top four are all females. The #5 spot is held by a guy who is the husband of my #1 "Favorite Hunting Buddy" and there are very logical reasons why this is.

Of the people in my group, only two have I ever seen post on a forum, and the one who posted the most, my "#1", does in-fact usually out-hunt her husband. Most just are not interested in posting on forums. Their computer time is better spent with research and I'm the only one who really spends much time following a few forums, and that's mainly for the sake of trying to help others enjoy what I have been for so long.

Oh, to this question I might add the following. Of the society females who are married, ALL of them tend to be more successful than their husbands when it comes to detecting. :)

Some of the females in clubs hat I know are just typical "coin hunters," whereas those in my "society" will do some urban coin hunting from time-to-time, but most prefer to search for silver and other older coins by workign non-urban sites such as ghost towns, homesteads, long-ago recreation sites, mining and logging camps and towns, etc., as well as urban renovation work, vacant lots, demolition sites, and private property.

Interesting question , and while I can't respond specifically for all women I will tell you that those I know and hunt with the most do not care for the same type of guys that I don't care for .... which is one reason why they are "favorite hunting buddies," and that is arrogant competitiveness. Too many guys I know seem to be either arrogant (know-it-all, my way it the only way, etc.) or very competitive. I mean, sure it's nice to find older coins, a lot of silver, clean mint-condition coins, choice artifacts, valuable trade tokens, etc., but too many tend to want to find the oldest, find the most quantity or the most valuable, and then continually remind you how well they are doing. It gets to the point where they are just too competitive, and when it starts to spill over into arrogant-influenced comments it can get worse.

Most, not all, of the gals I enjoy detecting with have husbands who they usually out-hunt. One reason is they are much more patient than the guys and this lets them be more efficient in site coverage as well as recovering more "iffies" that turn out to be good. On club outings I've attended in several states I note that more female hunters are out to have FUN and enjoy the hunt, where many/most male hunters are constantly inquiring about others finds and /or making sure their silver dime or nice ring or find is made known. Sure, some have fun. but they get way too competitive and boastful.

Of the gals I hunt with the most, one uses a White's XLT w/8" coil and Classic ID w/6
