Hey RM!!! As the Grand Poobah of this forum I've got a question for you.

I don't want this to come across wrong, but what is this forum for? I frequent several photo forums and all the others have a purpose. The PhotoSig forum is a great place to have people rate and critique your photos. The DPReview and Fred Miranda forums are essentially question and answer venues for a variety of specific photography topics. This forum doesn't seem to have a purpose and therefore I'm never quite sure how to reply, or sometimes even if I should reply at all.

Here comes the part where I'm going to sound like a jerk, but I sincerely mean it in a constructive fashion. Many of the photos in here (mine included) are extremely mediocre, at best. Most people do little more than simply post a picture. Yet, typical responses are the thumbs-up gif, or a simple comment like "nice photo" or "good job". Normally I don't respond as I really have no idea why most of the pictures get posted in here or what the person who posted them wants. They don't ask for advice and they don't offer any information. So even if I were inclined to give unwanted advice I'd risk looking foolish as I would be guessing on a whole lot of factors.

Here is my unsolicited two cents worth of advice:

1. Have everyone indicate the reason for posting a photo(s).
.....a. Are they seeking general opinions/advice on their photo(s)
.....b. Are they seeking specific opinions/advice on their photo(s)
.....c. Are they trying to share some aspect of the photo(s)

2. Provide as much information on the photo as possible
.....a. Equipment used
.....b. Camera settings
.....c. Light conditions
.....d. Goal of the photograph

3. Obviously all of the people in here have an interest in photography. Therefore, I for one would value their opinions/advice on my photos. I imagine that all of us want to get better with our photographs so I assume that others would welcome critique of their photos as well. I know that when I critique photographs it forces me to study the photo and think my way through it. I learn a lot this way. Clearly this needs to be done in a positive and encouraging manner. Of course I

Gary and I wil figure out a way to get your suggestions and others posted as forum rules/etiquette.
I've also been wanting to have photo contests every month with a theme.

I'll work on this......

One of the other photo forums has either a weekly or monthly photo assignment, I can't remember which. But at the end of the week/month they have a contest to see who posts the best photo relative to the assignment. I'm sure Gary would be happy to donate thousands of dollars in gifts for this cause too. :bouncy:

Bet ya thought more than once before ya hit the ole "Post Message" button  What you have to say is good for the forum. However, it is many times the casual poster, who comes out of the woodwork who posts a picture or comment up that adds greatly to any forum and gives it some life. If you don't have posters, there goes the so called forum. I'd hate to see anyone intimidated off and I know that is not your intention. I'm guilty as charged of posting mediocre to poor crap, but I do have fun taking and sharing the pictures. People who have not posted pictures do not realize the time involved to load and make the post. Those who actually specialize and tweak their work...great time must be involved in each of their posts. But, it's also fun if folks get involved.

Your post makes good sense and I know your intentions are good and we can actually learn from taking your suggestions. RM has some good ideas in addressing your post, and hopefully the forum flourishes from your onions :yo:

Ya done Good Nimrod in trying to take this joint on to the next level  But, don't expect not to see some of my mediocre felines and fungi thrown in to the mix....no comments will be necessary

I certainly don't want to discourage anyone from posting their photos Mike, far from it. Actually, I hope that we see a lot more photos in here. This place is one of the deadest photo forums on the Internet. The goal would be that with some constructive criticism all of our photos would be getting better and better as we learn from others. So keep posting them cats and 'shrooms Mike. :D

I hope we come up with something to fill a niche..

...I suppose the Friends & Finds or Royal's Story forum is probably more my speed.

But I DO think it would be great if you guys get some sort of high-speed, low-drag forum format that will meet more of you serious photographer/metal detectorist's needs.

Good luck.
