the dirt conditions and the lack of deep targets and I'm not talking about the once in awhile coin that I use to find at 8 to 11 inches in Wisconsin, those targets are just not here in Alabama or I should say at least not in the very few spots I have hunted, one park, one house, (the one I am renting) and the fort the guys hunt at. I have yet to find a target pass 6 to 8 inches, these targets were everywhere in Wisconson.
The dirt here in Alabama is a hard red dirt and this may very well be why, targets just don't sink like they did in Wisconsin, I hunted the fort with James, Craig and buddy in the woods and found a quarter from the 30's laying on top of the ground with only leaves covering it, that quarter was laying there for 40 to 60 years, it had to be because nobody but world war 2 soldiers were their, it was in a area where many fox holes were.
It has really thrown me for a loop, I must retrain myself and my hunting stlye, I long to get my coil over that deep faint repeatble target, you know the one I'm talking about Jim, where it is soft and low because it is deep. Another thing I don't understand is old old coins here in Alabama seem to be few and far inbetween, I know they are here because buddy found a two center a few years ago and a seated quarter behind his house years ago and Craig and James have found a few barbers and a few ih's but nothing like you or I would run across in the north, this really has me shaking my head Jim, where are the old coins, Alabama has been around as long as Wisconsin, it's really got me baffled.
Most of the summer here in Alabama is hot and pretty dry, to hot to detect plus the ground if it is in the sun is like cement, if your in the woods it isn't as bad but even then it's just hot!
I was thinking about trying some field hunting, my thinking here is those fields get plowed and maybe if I can get permission to hunt one I might find a civil war relic. Next week Craig is giving us 5 days off for the holiday, ( paid I might add

) I'm gonna head out early in the morning and hit a few parks and see whats out there then in the afternoon drive around and see whats out there in the way of homes.
Their are some great old finds here in Alabama Jim, I just gotta figure out where they are and use the right hunting stlye to find them, I learn how to hunt fields with Brian in Upstate NY so I'm thinking I have to lean to that stlye of hunting.
Hey Jim, not sure you saw this but the oldest coin I ever found in Wisconson was one of my last hunts, found a really cool civil war token but couldn't believe my eyes when I dug this baby outa the ground at around 8 to 9 inches, it was my wish coin for years and I couldn't believe it when I saw that eagle.

I'll keep ya posted Jim as I test the waters here in the south, I may
have to head for the ghetto parks but I have that itch again for some
old coins or even a old token
