Hey Mike from Virginia Beach

My wife and I are coming to Virginia Beach for vacation the week of July 6th. What are the regulations on metal detecting the beach? Any goodies there to be found?

Well, there ARE goodies to be found...look at the picture. It all came from here. The season has been off to a slow start for most but it is picking up now. I think by the time you get here it will be a target-rich environment and plenty of goodies for all.

As for regulations, yes, there are many.

1) Fill in all holes dug.

2) Remove all undesired targets, as opposed to reburying them or leaving them next to the hole.

3) Knock out everything but coins on your detector because only residents are allowed to remove precious metals from the beach.

4) A flat fee of 10% on all finds needs to be donated to the Tidewater Coin and Relic Club upon leaving for home.

5) Failure to follow any of these rules will mean that Gravedigger Max will take your picture and post it to the forum and give you a funny nickname.

Happy hunting!

Not Mike, but I can answer that question. There are no laws or regulations on detecting the beach (just be sure to fill the holes and put the trash in the trash cans). Hunting in the evening after people start leaving the beach is the best time. There is enough lights from the hotels to see what you are doing, so you could hunt all night long (if you don't wear out first). Be sure and bring a sand scoop and extra batteries and you will be fine. Good luck. May see you there, since I only live 30 minutes from the beach.

Good job Mike! Keep those rules enforced!

Thanks for the input. Look forward to visiting the area. I will be sure and follow all of the rules. Just look me up and I will give you your 10% commission.:wiggle:

Thanks Rich. We may see you there. Will arrive in Virginia Beach sometime Tuesday and will leave probably Friday. I will follow your advice and hunt late in the day. We are staying about 15 minutes away at a Days Inn on the expressway, I think it is 264. Had a chance to be stationed at Norfolk back in '77 but chose Florida instead. Wish I had come to Virginia.

There will probably be more folks out there with detectors next weekend than we can count. I usually hunt strictly the nighttime or wee-hour low tides, on Thurs/Fri/Sat night/morning. I rarely go out there in the daytime, just because there are too many people, too many questions, too many obstacles. There are many who hunt at night here, though many who do the daytime thing. And a few that do both.

See you when you get here!
