Hey...might be my oldest find ever!

Recently I posted about using some new settings and one of my favorite and pretty productive sites coming alive again.

Found a bunch if neat things on these hunts and I thought one of the best and coolest target was a French 5 cemtime coin dated 1918.
Now with some new information it turns out I might have been wrong about that.
On another forum I asked for a little help on the possible age of a simple flat button I also found and a member that seems very knowledgeable and experienced in these matters responded.
He seems to think this button probably dates back to between 1820 and 1840!
If this is correct this is pre civil war and beats my oldest target I have ever dug, (as far as I know so far), by several years because that other old target is an 1865 2 cent coin.

Way cool...this possibly could have come off the coat of a hunter or trapper because at that time in history this area was pretty much nothing but wilderness.
Sometimes the simplest things can make us pretty happy in this hobby, it seems.

I would say he hit the date right on imo . I was looking through mine for the same back mark had one close to it and mine came off plantation houses here in N.C. . Great find

Thanks for that...getting more and more elated with this thing with every new bit of corroborating information.

I believe the (best) has to do with the type of guild used. I got one thats got extra rich on the back I just thought it was made for a extra rich guy lol until my bud who is a button expert told me it had to do with the guild used on it. I have never researched that so dont quote me on that.

I would also agree on the age of the flat button...a frugal person may have still been wearing it many many years later.. a few things to consider- i almost always find flat buttons same places i find large cents, is there any source of water such as a small stream. . if so there might have been a fair amount of foot traffic retrieving water for daily use... you might want to do some old map research to see how close homes of this era may have once stood and plan a strategy. .. hope you can find more super old stuff..good luck...

Cool flat button:thumbup:
