For those of you who like to run a wide open -16 iron mask screen but can't handle all the loud iron, here's a quick tip for some settings that worked well for me yesterday:run ferrous tones, fast and deep, manual sens as high as you can get (you'll find you can often run max sens in a -16 iron mask) volume at 10 but gain at 4. That's the important setting so you don't blow your head off listening to the iron. This worked really well for me yesterday and I nailed this V-nick next to a pretty big piece of iron this way. I used the program George posted yesterday and I found this really ugly 1901 V Nickle. I found it in the ditch close to an old one room school house. It was right next to the side walk in the gravel ditch. I dug lots of trash let me tell you! I am going back there today and see what i can dig up. Too dogg done hot to hunt too long, I am going to try a little this morning before the heat gets really bad.

Sounds good, but dont you risk not hearing some deepies with such a low gain setting?

The Gain setting ONLY makes the signal from a target louder or softer in relation to it's depth.It's not a "gain" control like us americans are familer with,again it does not adjust the "power","sensitvity",or "depth" of the Explorer.
If because of a hearing loss you can not hear a target at depth, increasing the gain will allow you to hear the target as if it where closer to your coil.
The lower the Gain setting the MORE variablity in loudness between deep and shallow targets

Clarification on Gain:
Russ is absolutely right. Those of you who are running a high gain are not getting deeper. This is an american misconception of gain.
The higher gain on an Explorer will amplify all relative signals more and thus, you will be missing audio information regarding signal strength or 'depth'.
In fact with higher gain, you are 'smoothing' out the audio signal volume of deep targets with all targets and thus smoothing the information you could be getting.
If you want more information in the audio signal - that is - the audio volume to represent the signal strength then run your gain a bit lower.
The gain on the explorer is meant to help people with bad hearing to hear the weak signals by boosting them more.
I prefer the weak signals to sound weak, and thus I get more information on what I am hearing. However, my hearing is good and I use a good pair of earcup headsets.
I run gain about 2 or 3.
However, if your hearing is bad and want to boost all signals, then I would run gain at the preset of 5, no more.

First I would like to thank you for helping the people on this site. I bought my XS about 1 year ago. I read about it for the first month. Now in the field I can't seem to find anything of value. I have read 90% of the messeges on this board. I have learned alot. I live in Big Bear City, California. Which I thought would be a great place to detect with all the mines up here. I do detect alot of trash. I think I will try the Iron Mask settings I read about here. If you can give me any general help I would deeply apreciate it.
