Fairly New to this underwater Stuff,,, I have a quick question,,,, Im kinda Frusterated,,,
I Went to a lake today hunted in waist height water,,, was getting great signals,,, but there was hard packed clay under an inch of sand,,,, was so frusterating,,,,
What is the best way to get targets in Hard Packed Ground,,,, any tips would be greatly appreciated,,, I feel like carrying a pike pole to stir up the ground a little....

Hello,
I had the same problem in lakes around here. A scoop with a flatert profile to the bottom of it worked well for me. Quick kicks skimming just below the caly. I found most of the stuff in my case was embedded in the first inch of clay. The is a scoop from Pro-Stock detectors in Michigan that has a very flat profile. The more rounded or round profile scoops did not work very well in this situation for me, neither did the diamond shaped one.

If the clay is soft enough for stuff to sink into then a diamond scoop would cut into that. I have 3 different profiles in high end scoops. Each scoop has its own special use, but if I had to pick one for an all around scoop it would be the pro-stock pro-scoop. Take note though that around here there is very little plain sand. We have gravel, rocks, sand, clay, conglomerates, mud and many different percentage mixtures of some or all of those.

I will try to find an old post of that particular scoop so you can see how the profile looks.

Now hopefully a true expert will reply to your post! I have only been at it a few months.

Best Regards,
Steve

There are 2 sizes a medium and a large. I have the medium size. I am 6' 240 pounds and it works great for me. I think the larger one would be to much scoop for what you are trying to conquer!

Here are some other photos of that scoop and others. It again is the second post on the page with multiple photos.

Before you make a decision you may want to see what other people with more experience at this have to post.

wehave hard clay bottom in certain good areas, but the clay is covered by deeper sand............we/I believe the rings just sit on top of the clay under 5 to 8 inches of sand. finding gold in any form is hard and there always seems to be this unknown factor that keeps us from being able to find it easlily.........there is always something.

when diving here, we just fan the sand away and just pick up the ring......................for years i have thought about just getting snorkle rig like the guys in florida use and giving that a try..........i know it will work ok, i just never seem to try it, like i said, this clay is not everwhere we hunt, so we just fight it and move on to the next target.

it is a royal pain the the ..................................hard..........stinks...............gets all jammed up in any scoop.

the scoop attached here is the scoop that kaptainkosmic scoop and it really works great in the water..............bay and ocean in sand. i am truely greatful to have a scoop like this ...................i have had many kinds over the years and this baby is great.

but, like u, i also have 5" round scoop i like to use when the clay is around just because i can control the depth better and just try and dig off the top sand with the target........................IT IS DAMN HARD TO FIND THE RIGHT SCOOP.

with very little sand, u may want to give that fanning deal a try.

keep us in the loop and good luck.

Hi Max,
Yes, that is my #1 scoop too! I wish it was made in small, medium and large though. I could use one smaller then the medium size for certain areas. I love the "quick sift" of that scoop!

Have a golden day at surf church!

Best regards,
Steve
