Hey all you "Tesoro lovers"-----

D&P-OR

Well-known member
What Tesoro detector(s) are you useing at this point in time & what do you like the best about it (them)??---I could write a book on this post (on my likes) but I'll leave it up to your response!------Wonder if Randy (Hombre) likes 'em? ----------Del

I haven't owned/used my DeLeon long enough to form much of an opinion, or likes/dislikes about it. The main reasons for my recent purchase though, were warranty, reputation, and quality vs cost. I will add also, that I like it more with each passing day.........

Hey Dell

You would have to dig me out of the woodwork with that question. I like them plenty well, my Wife has owned a Tesoro Toltec ll since 1994 and I bought the White's XLT the same year. In the old house yards she would beat me in finds in the trashy parts of the yard, the XLT would null badly in the nails, while the Toltec would just 'find' stuff in the same places. We still own that ol' Toltec, while the XLT was traded off for the new DFX in 2001. And the Toltec ll would still run circles around the DFX. The Tiger Shark was the second Tesoro we bought in 2001, and I added a NOS original Bandido in the same year. The disease of buying more of older model Tesoros has continued, and now I have the fever really bad. Now I'm on the search for a straight rod Amigo in nice condition.

Once I get to retire here in a couple of years, it is my goal to dust off my Tesoro collection and rotate them once a week to test them all out. Then I will have to test them against my White's 5900 Di Pro SL (CB) , 6000 Pro XL and I know the little IDX Pro (Mr. Bill modefied) does well, as I use it quite a bit. To sum it up, yes there are a lot of things to like about Tesoros, the newer ones I don't know much about, but the older ED 120 ones are the 'hot ticket' in the small rusty iron type sites, old churches, picnic groves, old house and sidewalk tear outs. In these trashy old sites aluminum can slaw is'nt much of a problem, as we all know can slaw is a problem for any make of detectors.

Del,
The Tesoro that I( use more than the others at the moment is my Eldorado( micro max type). It does well in most areas I take it and I now mainly use it with the 5.75" coil. It still holds its own with my newer and fancier machines.

Hiya Del - your old Tejon with a 5.75 coil is proving to be a killer. However my vote goes to the humble Silver Umax and 10 x 12 concentric coil - an absolute MONSTER!

Tiger Shark,
Best freshwater detector for small gold stuff. Easy to use, found a large platinum ring a month or so ago! Almost knocked my ears off!

Using a Tejon and an older model Stingray. Love them both for their simplicity, depth and ability to find the goodies. They both have quick response, can handle trashy sites with ease and are all around just the best detectors (for me) that I've ever used. For me personally, I'll take a Tesoro detector over any other brand at this point in time. I've tried one of the newer updated models from another company and personally I was not impressed. More frustrated than anything, so I went back to my Tesoros and having fun again!

Ah phooey none of them Tesoro's are any good...... Just kidding. I have tried almost all of the Tesoro models (some even a couple of times) and a bunch of other brands and I have not found a Tesoro that I didn't like. No other way of saying it than they just work & are alot of fun to use. And yes I am paid to say that, only problem is that it has been over 20 years and I haven't received my first check yet  Steve.

My current line-up of Tesoros consist of the Silver & Eldo Umax.
I'd have more but, that would start a collection, collecting becomes addictive.....

They cover most bases when out detecting and the Silver makes a good loaner when you want company.

Tesoro units are compact, easily stowable, backpackable, easy to operate and the wife doesn't know how many Tesoro units you own because they look similar.

I'm using a Silver

im using a customized golden u max

This is my bad mama jama #1 go to machine. I have an external 50k Potentiometer under a small cover added to the front (no room inside). This allows me to use thresh hold for GB settings for various coils. The 10 x 12 is the deep ground pounder. But it does a suprising imitation of a small coil if you hover over the area & let it separate the targets out. The balance is a tad off but I don't even notice it nowadays.

The coin check button is like sliced bread. It is very rarely fooled & I can tell a zinc 80% of the time as the just barely chirp when the button is depressed. Anything over a zinc rings nice & clear.Anything that goes totally silent-well that's potential gold!. I set my lower end above iron & so it sounds off on my smallest gold charm-just below 3 on the disc dial.I have nailed 7 gold rings & ea ring studs etc...

The other button is a pinpoint button. It is a thresh hold all metal. I use it to set the GB & get a steady hum when the coil is pumped.

The best trick I learned from the Troy website was the "Tesoro shake". I mentioned this before but it really works. I listen for a target to sound off. Then size it with the pin pointer-OR-just shake the coil to size it. If the target is localized (small) you can get it to rattle like a paint can. This likely a coin or ring. The can slaw & bottle caps tend to break up when you do the shake. After digging everything for a while I've learned to trust this method.

Tabs ring solid & I dig 'em. If there are tabs at a spot I know there may also be rings so I get over it & dig.

I have thought of a target ID machine but no. I like the style-speed of the Tesoro & if you don't dig it all the ring count goes down.Fact of life...

I love my Deleon. I've learned alot, and I know I still have much to learn. I'm gonna master that machine!!

The Vaquero is my first Tesoro and its a park cleaner, the iron discrimination is a very reliable, I have found coins next to rusted nails, bolts, washers, in many arrangement's i.e nails on top of coins, coins on edge near washers ect. It has very fast recovery speed. The deepest coin I found was a clad dime at 9.25 inches not including turf hight, not bad at all , and not even supertuned.

This is my first Tesoro, a used SuperLOBO for prospecting, its super sensitive on small objects (gold, cat whiskers, tacks, foil wrappers) + I got a small coil for it for trashy areas around old mining camps & mine tailings.

Its lightweight & easy to swing for long periods of time.

HELLO DARKFLIGHT,GREAT PIECE.I WENT TO www.alibaba.com TO CHECK FOR A 50K ROTORY MICRO POTENTIOMETER."POT" AND FOUND LOTS OF THEM, I WAS THINKING OF REMOVING THE SPEAKER (AS I USE HEADPHONES ANY WAY) AND INSTALLING A SOLID SPEAKER COVER (PAINTED WHITE) THEN INSTALLING THE "POT" AND MARKING THE DIFFERENT COILS I HAVE WITH A NUMBER ( 1.2.3.ETC) AND MARK THE SPEAKER COVER WITH NAIL POLISH TO THE MATCHING COIL NUMBER. BUT BEFORE I GO THROUGH ALL THAT MODIFICATIONS I WANTED TO ASK YOUR OPINION WOULD THERE BE ENOUGH SPACE UNDER THE PANEL AFTER REMOVING THE SPEAKER TO INSTALL THE POT? YOU SEE I WOULD BUY THE PARTS AND SEND IT OUT TO A FRIEND WHOM WOULD DO THE MODS, PLS. EXCUSE THE CAPS I 'M 69 YEARS OLD AND HAVE POOR EYE SIGHT BUT STILL HUNT. THANK YOU AND HAVE A BLESSED EVERY DAY

It should work where the speaker goes but you have to inspect for clearance behind the speaker. Also, its glued on pretty well.I'm afraid it would damage the plate prying it & the amount of heat needed is more than I would want to apply.Like I said-much easier to go external.

I used a inhalor cap as it fit the pot perfectly. It has since been painted black. Straight up for my normal coil. I like to GB for the location anyhow but yes-the adjustment is fairly signifigant between the coils.

.

Good luck. I've been on a dry spell & I'm afraid I've run my local spots bare...
