I didn't know that Wisconsin had an official state fossil until I found this medallion. (Not that I cared that much). Personally, I think that they could have picked something more interesting that a Trilobite but I guess they didnt' ask me, did they?

My question is, When did The State of Wisconsin EVER ask the people about anything ?.. If you live here, you know what I mean! Taxes, money to the rich, metal detecting! They do however
let us know how much to pay them. let's hope you never dig up the state fossil! they would probably throw you in jail :nono: I guess I might be venting, wrong place for it! HH C-Dog

Surprisingly I think your Wisconsin medallion just might be a rolled penny?

But you guys don't be too hard on the Wisconsin Legislature, all states waste the taxpayers money on about an even par.

The Wisconsin state fossil in question is one of the Silurian trilobites, a type called the Calymene celebra:thumbup:. The name has been changed a few times over the years, but I think that is what it is being called presently. We have them here locally and they come out of the quarry in various states of survival depending on the rock crusher. I've found them all my life, usually in crushed limestone driveways.

One interesting story concerning a trilobite/Garrett Metal Detecting is I found my first silver and a full intact Calymene trilobite at the same time. I took my wife and kid up to a six car capacity crushed limestone parking lot to hunt pennies. I found over 10 dollars in coins in that parking lot including 75 dimes. I was just off the parking lot about 6 inches and in the edge of the grass and hit another dime signal. Upon bending down to use the ProPointer I saw the trilobite and upon digging the dime I remember the wife saying boys this one is PRETTY and she then put it into the Garrett apron.

Later on that night when I was cleaning up the bounty of the parking lot that was encased with limestone crust, I saw the PRETTY one and discovered a 1924 Liberty dime, my first silver and I didn't even know I had it until about 4 hours after digging it!

I resemble that

From the land of the Bluenose.....that is too cool. I collect crushed pennies and would gladly trade a Peggy's Cove lighthouse one for one of those....just pm if interested. Happy hunting!

Yup, I think i"ve found five of those medallions so far - two from the Milwaukeee Zoo, two from the NEW (NE Wisconsin, ie Green Bay) Zoo and this one which is probably from some museum. I've never used one, but I understand that you put a penny in one slot, a quarter in another slot, select a design and _zippety Doo Dah - out comes one of these medallions. Hopefully they are using post 1982 Zinc pennys.

All of the squished pennies I have found are copper.
