Here's some white balancing pics I use to WB off of in local arenas...

I use the older Pringles lid covered over one of my smaller lenses, put on manual, covered with Pringles lid after focing on light above surface and then shot. The new Pringles lid is kind of clearish plastic while the older one is more opaque. Here's the optimized versions of the three pics I have stored all the time on my CF card. These optimized versions don't gradually go from one shade to another incidentally like the real ones. They seem to have rings when you save them for the internet. Sorry.. Just for illustration only. <img src="/metal/html/biggrin.gif" border=0 width=15 height=15 alt=":D">
For a friend of mines kids basketball team.. (Really poor light)

The local ice arena that has the best lighting of the bunch.

The roller hockey rink. In the middle somewhere...

I had to make them this large to reduce the lack of a smooth color to even a reasonable level...
I keep these 3 images on my CF card all the time since shooting hockey and sports seems to be my main thing these days...
Guvner..

You actually cover the lens with a Pringles lid and then white balance? It sounds like you're using the lid as a filter. Also, why keep these images on your CF card? As you can tell I haven't done much custom white balancing, and the little I've done is with a 18% gray card I bought at the camera store. A lot of guys use a coffee filter too. But I always thought you needed to get the reflected light off of an object roughly equivalent to an 18% gray card to set the proper temperature. Using the lid to filter the light is where I'm getting confused. Help me out and step me through your custom white balancing procedures. Something is not making sense here.

I use the kit lens since the Pringles lid fits over it and doesn't fit over the 70-200mm lens. Flip the lens on manual focus, aim at one of the lights directly over head and over the surface, focus and once it's in focus place the Pringles lid over the lens. Shoot the picture. You'll get something mighty similar to one of the above pictures in the original post. Then go to Custom White Balance and pick the picture you just shot to white balance to. Select OK. Go shoot.
I'll post a picture of the cap you want in a minute. I may go to the grocery story in a minute to see if Pringles has any of the older lids left. If so I'll post a picture of both.
Hope that helps... Guvner..

Back when I did custom color printing, my best customers knew to include a shot of a Kodak 18% in the same light as the rest of their pics.
Made color balance a snap. Even with mixed lighting.
