Gold Mountain King Cobra. It runs at 15 khz. with notch and tone ID. Runs very quiet in trash. If you disc. or notch out certain targets you will not hear them. Not even a peep. Very similar to the old Tesoro Golden Sabre. Fun little machine to use.

Those are a rare find indeed, I've only seen about five surface on the internet the past 5-6 years all of them in mint condition.

I agree, They are smooth operating detectors with terrific notching abilities and the tones are fantastic! You're going to love it more and more each trip out, Boy you did good buying this detector.

I'll post a couple of pics of my Cobra, I took Monte's and JB's advice and added a couple of features.

Congrats!

Paul, it took me a while to find this one. It sat in my closet for about a year because it wasn't working right. I almost forgot about it. I was pretty sure it was a bad coil so I ordered a new/used coil and lower rod from Keith Wills and now it runs like a champ. I wish I had known how to do the GB mod. I need a manual GB in my ground up here in Washington State. It's a great detector but I'm not sure if I will keep it for long. I've been using the Whites 6000 series for over 20 years and just picked up 2-IDX Pros with Mr. Bills mods. for my ghost town hunting so I'm not sure how much I would use the Cobra.

Most likely the coil problem is the connector, When I first received my Cobra it had no response from the coil. After pulling apart the coil connector I seen the problem which was a broken wire from one of the coil pins, Soldered it back on and she's worked ever since....Check yours out and I bet that's the problem, A minor repair.

If you decide to keep your Cobra, You can manually adjust the miniature GB trimmer on the circuit board for your area. Rather than add on a GB pot just adjust the GB trimmer pot for your ground mainly in an area you hunt the most, Then leave it there.

The IDX Pros and your Whites 6000 series are good detectors, It sounds like you're used to these type of metered detectors over a non-metered one. However, Every one needs a non-meted detector and the King Cobra would be that one, Hang on to it and I bet you get attached to her :)

Paul, I just got the IDX Pros recently. For my Ghost town hunting the past few years I was using a Compass Gold Scanner Pro and a Minelab Advantage. I was so impressed with IDX Pro with the small Bullseye coil at these iron infested sites I grabbed another one when I saw it for sale. The King Cobra is smooth and doesn't false much over iron. in fact it's almost to quiet in the iron. Which pot is for the GB? If I remember right there is more than one. The GB is set a bit to positive up here.

Very nice machine I may look for one at some point. Its amazing it sat in the closet for a year definitely hard to find just as hard as an AU machine. Dan

Bill, because I'm extremely happy with your modifications on my 2 IDX Pros and being the good guy that I am, I'm willing to help you out and trade you my King Cobra for that cruddy old 1650. I know you must be dumbfounded by such a generous offer.

Hi

I had both a 1650 & a King Cobra a few years ago, and foolishly I sold them because I wasn't using them. It's taken me 3 years to locate a 1650, of that I just received it.

The King Cobra was a take off of the Tesoro Royal Sabre, at least the schematics look the same. I have never seen a Tesoro Royal Sabre, but I have seen a few King Cobra's. Very nice working units.

I do like the modified IDX, and it's real close to the 1650 in hunting trashy area's. The IDX just doesn't hunt the nail infested trashy area's like the 1650 can, but there's a trade off for everything. The modified IDX is considerable deeper, and handles the bad ground better.

Enjoy your King Cobra.

Have a nice day

I'll try to post a pic of the GB trimmer pot to be adjusted within the week, Right now I'm flooded with homework so let me catch up and sometime on Friday or so I'll open up my Cobra and post a pic.

Plus, I'd keep the Cobra if I were you, You'll regret getting rid of it. Trust me everyone that sold theirs regretted it since.

Nice GMT 1650 Bill,

Better hang on to this jewel, As you know they are so hard to find.

I never had the opportunity to try one, I've heard they are good in iron sites better the King Cobra and the Cobra is better for coin shooting so each have an edge over the other.

Take care Bill and best wishes to you and your family!

I think with the GB set properly for my bad ground I'm sure I will like it even more but I still have to many detectors. I'm not sure if I will be using anything other than my IDX Pros this fall and winter.

Bill, so far I've been very pleased with the IDX Pro with the Bullseye coil at my ghost town sites. Our soil up here is pretty mineralized with some bad rocks to boot and is sandy in most areas that I hunt so the coins can run a bit deeper. The IDX Pro with your mods has enabled me to set it up to cope with the mineralization and the rocks for each site which can change from bad to worse. In my ground the depth with the IDX Pro is as good as any detector I've owned when properly adjusted. It also has a faster recovery speed than my XL Pro which helps at these sites. I think I will play with the blacksand switch next weekend using zero discrimination at an old park site where the coins run really deep and the ground is very bad.

The black sand switch when put in the black sand mode, just lowers the level of discrimination. In this position, one can achieve a true all metal, discrimination mode.

Have a nice day.
