I made that thing huge scanning it in as high as I could go before working on it...

How much time did you put in that one? I retouched a photo a couple of years back myself. After awhile you get a little cross-eyed dontcha?
 
Not knowing what I was doing didn't help much. I'd zoom in to the highest level I could and then start copying and pasting blocks and use the smear tool...
Not sure what the correct way was... Guvner..
