Here's How They Catch Relic Hunters at Kennesaw Mountain, GA

Wow, thats some video. We don't have to worry about them anymore.

:usaflag:Two more dumb-a$$es off the streets for now.

Holy cr&p!!!!:surprised:

Don't the police there have anything better to do than scramble a helicopter to catch 2 people metal detecting????:yikes:

Where else could that helicopter have been for used right at that moment??....to help catch a street robber? burglar? car chase? I don't think those detectorists were doing the right thing, in fact they deserved to be caught, but a helicopter is a little bit of a waste of resources don't you think?? Like using a sledgehammer to crack a walnut...........and how much money did that highly important arrest cost for the use of the helicopter against the cost of the crime??

Thank God our police use their resources properly. If I was a taxpayer in that town I would be pretty mad about that I think.

Couldn't agree more.

It's good practice for the cops and the air crew, they learn more every time they go out on a call
like this on what to say to each other with out wasting words. Also if there is more than one suspect
the air crew can keep a better eye on them better than a officer that is on the ground and help them
to avoid a ambush.

What a vid! They didn't stand a chance.

I was waiting for the guided munitions to come in after watching all the wartime FLIRs out there :)

Mentez- It was likely Homeland Security or Stimulus money that "needed" to be spent........cause that's how the gov rolls...............

Smitty

PS- I do also agree the guys got what they deserve.....but at what cost?

WOW! i'm glad we don't have anything to worry about. i understand the fines, jailtime, and penalties are pretty stiff if your're caught detecting on federal land. as for me, i'll stick to private land with permission!

Back when I bought my first detector years ago, the Dealer never warned me of all the things I've had to learn on my own related to this video. I also suspect many Dealers do not enlighten the buyers about such things as they would see a drop in sales as you find you are not as free to detect America as all those old Ads or Promotional's had us believing. As it is said, ignorance of the Law is no excuse but from what I saw in the video, I think these guys knew exactly where they were hunting and for what and possibly to make money.

I have hunted public federal lands here in Idaho and have had no problems with the federals but I was not hunting protected items and or known archaeological sites, grave sites, battle grounds, and monuments. I do not agree with all parts of the Antiquities Act but it's here and is wrongly being used in some cases by Archaeologist and the Government, to prosecute people just innocently picking up something or metal detectorists for hunting what at one time, the relic Gestapo's had absolutely no interest what so ever in. We should protect certain places such as known historic battle fields, old Pony Express stage stops in Nevada, archaeological sites, graves, and monuments and in this case, I'm glad to see for once these kind of detectorists were caught. Should a detectorist though find lets say an unknown and what becomes clear is a archaeological site on federal lands, the federals should give every encouragement to report it's existence without fear of prosecution. As I understand, you can be prosecuted for even digging an unknown site.

Too bad there is not a Forum here on these matters to make people aware of the consequinces. I know after I first read the Antiquities Act, I was left with what can I detect. As far as I can determine, there are no Federal Statutes on metal detectors. This Act though is how they prosecute without any.
