Here's an interesting question!!!!

In your honest opinion (IYHO) Which is the best combination detector/DD coil combination (other than the Explorer/Etrac) for handling those pesky steel bottle caps??--Forget about the concentric coils this question is for the DD's.---The DD's have certain benefits (especially in my mineralized ground) and I know there are different little tricks that can be done in dealing with these "critters" (most of them of which I've tried). I just wanted to try & get an opinion from some of you experienced guys which detector/DD combo you think is the most effective in handling steel b.c.'s--(under general hunting conditions).-------Thanks, Del

That dilemma was just discussed on the V3 forum. Just a glance at the Analyze or pinpoint screen will tell you if it is a BC or quarter. Quarters will show the 2.5 KHz as the dominant frequency used while a BC is either the 7.5 or 22.5 KHz.

All the screens (search, pinpoint, analyze) have interesting features/patterns aid to discern targets on the Vision/Specrta V3. It's an interesting machine and is a joy to figure out. I have a long ways to go.
I haven't had the need to bump up the BC reject feature much because of just what Larry stated.

I will, however, state up front that I am a fan of a concentric coil because they generally display superior discrimination characteristics compared with a wide-scan (Double-D) coil.

One thing that makes this difficult to answer is the fact that some models don't have as versatile a coil selection. For example, if you like the general performance of an E-Trac or an Explorer, but someone asked the question regarding performance with a concentric coil only, you'd be at a terrible disadvantage because there are not a lot of concentric coils to choose from.

This is how your questions cuts in on the ability to compare models such as White's 6.59kHz units. I've done two months of field comparisons with a couple of new White's 'V' models, compared with XLT's, MXT's, M6, 6000 Pro XL/XL Pro and Classic IDX Pro (modified) as well as a couple of Minelab Explorer's and a model from Garrett and one from Tesoro.

Of all models used the best in bottle caps was the modified IDX Pro because even at iron nail rejection they would audibly ignore/reject them better than the rest. Next up were the XL Pro and XLT due to the "bottle cap reject" audio. All of this was before or without referring to the visual display. However, since here's really only one factory Double-D coil available for the (the small "Shooter" coil), and I don't care for it. Poor depth in this frequency design.

Of the rest, I can usually do 'OK' with either the MXT or M6 and the 6" EQ2 DD Excelerator coil, and not too bad with the 10" DD or the 10X12 SEF coil. The new 'V3' does have a bit of an ad vantage when it comes to employing the visual display. Even with the Double-D coils and both Vision/Spectra V3's I used, you could almost always identify those bottle caps that registered with a 25

The Teknetics T2/Fisher F75 platform with the stock 11 inch DD coil (or the F70 fitted with the 11" DD) with the audio set to 3B (3 tone/bottle cap reject) mode works pretty good - bottle caps produce a broken audio signal while coins and buttons produce a clean signal - pretty easy to tell the difference without looking at the TID meter.
