Many years ago, in another life, my brother and I were walking on Wingan Inlet beach on the wilderness coast in the far east of the state of Victoria here in Oz.
It was low tide and we had about a 3' break happening on the first bar out from the beach, with plenty of white water washing into the shallow gutter.
We became aware of a long dark shape slowly swimming up and down the gutter as we walked along.
We both thought it was probably a shark and considered going back to the car for the speargun and getting us some fresh meat but seeing as it was about a 3km walk round trip we chickened out and went about our business.
A few hours later, on our way back we came across the critter washed up on the beach.
It turned out to be a Lancet Fish, an inhabitant of super deep waters from out beyond the continental shelf. It was about 4' long and was one scary looking mother!
If we had'nt have been so lazy, it would quite possibly have been the only one ever taken by a spearfisherman.
If your interested in seeing one, Google Lancet Fish and check out the images.

Nice 1 Guzz, I got one of those mounted on the wall, here at the casa. Caught him in '90, just before they outlawed keepin' 'em, unless they are 80" and you have a tarpon tag.
