the reason the bottle cap is heard deeper is it's more surface area..Try the gold bug in disc nail reject 21 or so on the disc and see if it hits the small gold..If it does you know it is way hot on gold..My T-2 wont hit small gold like the gold bug se will heck it wont see it unless it's in all metal but the gold bug I had would hit small gold like earring stud in disc quite impressive...

I believe your machine is fine ..Is this you're first detector? I dont mean this in a negative way....If you knew how some machines hit tiny gold you would be more pleased I believe..

Gold hunting is not my forte but The gold bug seemed very capable even on my less than optimum detector..

I get 5" on a 6 grain sized flake of Gold if the you have a good ground balance with average
mineralized ground. However, you will get less in black sand on the ground. You will do
much better with a larger nugget.
