Here is the real Scoop

Last week I was notified by Sunspot that they wanted to reinforce my 720 stealth scoop (bought almost 2 months ago). with no charge to me other then sending it in and they would send it back to me with a 3 to 7 day turn around Now that

Ron now good is that 720i at the 20* angle it uses compared to the standard straight scoop ? and do you think the handle end being so far into the scoop is in the way of retrieving targets any problem ? . Jim

Jim the handle no longer goes into the scoop. The angle is perfect and now when you push with your foot you actually have a ledge or a step to push down making it soooo nice. That's why I almost twisted my ankle with the old type. I can promise you this I will never use the old type again. The only time I would use the old scoop is when I travel because it's a travel scoop it unbolts in the middle. One of these days I will buy SunSpots travel handle.

The wood handle is great too. All you have to do is wiggle it as your digging and it keeps on cutting through the sand. You can cut the edges of the hole without the scoop twisting too. Great Scoop

Go here and see what I mean http://www.gold-scoop.com/720.html

Are you from Long Island ???

Yeah, that 720 is da bomb! I love mine, I must have gotten mine right after you, and use it for water hunting AND dry sand hunting. It handles so well and for me is perfectly balanced. The only negative (AND I EMPHASIZE THAT IT REALLY IS NOT A NEGATIVE) I see is that NO scoop manufacturer puts a good strong magnet in their scoops. I added 3 long bar magnets in mine to catch the bobby pins and other ferrous crud. I am still playing with positioning them for the best effect but they do catch the crud where I have them now...

LOVE LOVE LOVE my 720! Thanks Chuck!

I've been using mine for a few weeks now and it has become my goto scoop for in the water!
I also just got a letter stating they wanted to beef it up a bit so it went straight into a box and went out yesterday!
That darn thing was already built like tank! So, does anyone know what this tweak is all about?

Anyhow, I hope to get it back before the Holidays as I plan to be in the water a lot as I'll be on vacation!

HH

I'm not sure what they are going to do but they want to beef it up around where the handle goes in ???

Hi Ron that is good news from a few vids i seen it was the old handle where targets got stuck under the handle ill be getting that 720i over the Winter , and yes iam from LI on the east end Northfork its a 30 minute drive to the Southfork , i love all the beaches bay and ocean . HH Jim

I grew up in Long Beach moved to florida 26 yrs ago ...sure do miss the striped bass fishing and the weakfish

A friend of mine Chuck called a 6 day a week gorilla bent the back of his because it had the single brace. Chuck put a double brace on it and may have added a bit more metal. I know exactly what you are talking about ... my scoop rolled or felt dull when the hard pan didnt have much sand on it. I have a modified ProScoop much like Rons T-Rex. You cant beat a great scoop for making life easier out there. Chuck makes a good tuff scoop and goes out of his way to make what ever improvements needs to be made.

Sitting at home yesterday afternoon and hear this tap-tap-tap at my door and I go look out the door and there it is!! My new 720 scoop!

Chuck had notified me that he was doing an upgrade to the 720 and offered to do the upgrade for current 720 owners for free! Tell me they don't stand by their product.

So I get it out of the box and compare it to the old 720 and WOW, he really did beef up the new model. The braces are the biggest change I saw immediately, they appear much stronger (not that the old ones were weak) and then inside the scoop the brace across the top is solid, not perforated metal any more.

I've just got to give CHuck and Sunspot a great big ORANGE THUMBS UP for how well he takes care of his customers. Oh, and I know the new scoop HAS to weigh more but I sure can't tell any difference in the balance of heft of it. Chuck, you guys ROCK!

Here's a side by side of the old and new scoops....

OK, guys, I have had 4 other scoops before I got my 720... one of them I added a long handle to when I got into water hunting. This failed miserably since I had no idea the stresses that water hunting puts on a scoop.

When I started detecting I knew I would be a beach hunter 90 - 95 % of the time. My very first scoop was a plastic Cherry Juice bottle that I cut the end off of and drilled holes in. Total cost was ZERO dollars and about 45 minutes labor.

My second scoop was a PVC affair that I built from left over parts and pieces and a mop handle. I couldn't get the handle to fit well enough and so while it worked better than the first scoop, I longed for a "real" scoop but was on a very tight budget.

My 3rd and 4th scoops were the 2 Scoop Deal from Colonial Metal Detectors. They were commercially made scoops and a far cry better than what I had made to date. Total cost for these was $50 and change delivered to my door.

These two scoops worked very well while I was doing only dry sand or wet sand at the water's edge, but when I got my Surf PI and graduated to real water hunting the 24 inch handled scoop just didn't work. So I went back to DIY scoops. I took the bend-over scoop from the 2 scoop deal package and got an aluminum handle, 3 "U" bolts and a hose clamp and built a "long handled scoop". I still have the 24" handled scoop and it is now my back-up dry sand scoop and loaner scoop.

Now this DIY scoop worked pretty well as long as I kept in mind that it was a VERY light duty scoop. I put too much "oomph" into a target once and felt the handle start to give. Luckily I caught myself and only kinked the handle, and I was able to fix this. Not long after this however, I was hunting in some pretty rough surf and got hit pretty hard by a wave as I was stepping down on the scoop and I stepped on it sideways and bent the scoop beyond repair.

It was at this point my wife took pity on me and allowed me to get any scoop I wanted but I would have to pay back the "house account" with my finds AND I can't get another scoop until the house is paid back and I have enough finds to buy another. So, finding a very sturdy reliable scoop was paramount. I looked at all the scoops I could find and tried talking to all the companies and, long story short, I decided on the Sunspot Stealth 720. And let me tell you, I am SO GLAD I chose this one! It is one stout scoop. And Chuck REALLY stands by his product.

Sorry for the long winded post but hopefully some newbies can learn from me and save themselves some heartache and hassle.

Boy those scoops look hideous. If the forum knew that's what you were using I think we would have all chipped in and got you the 720

 I know you are only joking around but man that's cold. I think he did an outstanding job myself and am glad he shared it with all of us. I'm always into seeing people mod stuff or do it yourself type projects, especially when it ends up saving you a few bucks over just buying what you want. Even when I can get something for about the same cost it takes me to make it, sometimes it's the thrill of the project and not so much the cost savings that drives me to take something on. And, often you can customize whatever you are building or modding to your particular needs in features. That's what is so interesting about stuff like this to me. Part of that process is failure though of course, but that's how we figure out how to do it better next time.

Again, great job.

I think he got a big kick out of it. I know exactly what your saying sometimes I do the same thing !!! It's fun to be creative. Some people have great Ideas and you definitely can learn by others.........for sure !:drinking:

Hey just to set the record straight , by no means was I making fun of your attempts to create your own scoop I was just happy you were able to get the right one...Enjoy it's a great scoop :crylol:

Hey, NO WORRIES! I knew you were joking, and they are kinda fugly.... You should see my 24 inch after I had to fix him. After 18 months of use almost daily and a couple of months use as a water hunting scoop during this time, I still use it as a back up/loaner scoop. I did have to do a quick fix to reinforce the basket as seen in these pic's. Now this is HIDEOUS!
