Each year for a number of years it has become custom for the President of the United States to accept the gift of a live Thanksgiving turkey.
Each year the President Pardons the turkey and it is then sent on tour to be displayed in various Thanksgiving day parades and eventually lives out it's life whereever pardoned turkeys are sent.
Turkey growers from all over the country compete for the honor to have one of their birds be selected as the President's turkey. Out of all the birds offered (I assume via photo and vital statistics) only six are selected for the final selection process.
Those six birds are then brought to a place where men dressed in business suits act "Presidential" to see which of the huge beautiful white turkeys is least agressive and less likely to attack the President during the Pardoning ceremony.
Last years bird did receive a pardon, unfortunately, I suspect he was pardoned to Iraq. Perhaps this bird was a gift from John Kerry or Nancy Pelosi
