seams to be a brass wheat penny, that is real worn like a indian head penny. i have never seen one like this!!
brass you say! yes, cant get a good photo of it, to worn.
 
Apparently, in 1942 & 1944 the mint took the tin out of the metal that cents were made from which basically changed the alloy from bronze to brass (reference: coins.about.com). I know that wheat cents lost in ground that stays moist/wet all the time come out of the ground looking pretty funky.

funky is putting it mildly this thing is so worn i have indians that are newer looking. must be brass or some soft alloy.
to bad it was in better shape mite be worth $$$ but that is how it goes.
 
I read somewhere that the wheats minted in 1945 were made out of brass shell casings to commemorate the end of WW2.
