Here is a bit of historical info on the pedestal seal I found ....

[attachment 209268 sealgodspeedtheplough2011.jpg] One of my Brit buddies found this photo of the same seal I found from someone in the UKselling the seal on E-bay. It sold for 29 GBP in July of this year (just about $50 USA). Don't know if it's a reproduction, I suspect it is based on how new it looks ... but it's a dead ringer for the one I found.

[attachment 209270 sealcloseupedit.jpg] The history behind this late 1700's / early 1800's seal is this : GOD SPEED THE PLOW -- "God speed the plough, 'a wish for success or prosperity,' was originally a phrase in a 15th-century song sung by ploughmen on Plough Monday, the first Monday after Twelfth Day, which is the end of the Christmas holidays, when farm laborers returned to the plough. On this day ploughmen customarily went from door to door dressed in white and drawing a plough, soliciting 'plough money' to spend in celebration.

I can imagine how that celebration money was spent .... likely in the local pub. Hey Bubba, we'll have to bring a set of all white clothing and try this the next time we visit the UK .... get us some of that celebration money!
