Hey folks, I missed all you Tesoro folks and missed my Tesoro detector also. Had another brand for awhile (Eagle II SL), good machine but just didn't do as good as the good ole Tesoro's finding the lower conductive goodies for my liking. Killed two birds with one stone - Sold the Eagle at a good price & bought the Cutlass II uMax at a good price & had some much needed $$$ left over. I know the Cutlass II uMax is about the same as the Silver uMax & that is not a bad thing. I have preached for years that the Silver uMax is the best machine made under $250.00 and I still believe it. Thanks I will be droppin more often I hope. Hope all is well with everyone. Steve
Welcome back,Steve. Just went out with mine today. Glad to hear posts about the Silver as they aren't too many any more. Don't know exactly what there is about the machine-but it's hard to not like it.
hi steve, been a while since we talked and i was thinking of giving you a call sometime to see what you have been finding. glad to see you are back to tesoro again. that cutlass ll umax is a nice little machine and you should do well with it. you are sure right about the silver umax being the best machine for under 250.00. i wouldn't take twice that for mine, well maybe i would lol, but it sure is a coin finding little machine especially with the 5.75" coil on it. kinda like slingshot said, don't know what it is about the machine- but it's hard not to like it. good luck with the cutlass ll and lets see some finds............roger
Thanks for the welcome back my friends. Give me a call anytime Roger alsways enjoy, detecting talk. Will keep you all posted on my finds with the Cutlass. Thanks. Steve.
I had an Eagle II SL earlier this year. Great detector, with a lot of useful features.
It is also a brick and hangs on your arm like a drunken prom date. The balance stinks and the stock coil has poor separation.
Its pretty long in the tooth, these days, too. I liked it, mind you, but I liked the lighter, more up to date units better
SO I don't blame you for getting it gone. I would have gotten more detector for my money, though, if it were me.
Having left over money in your pocket does you no good, if your detector 'aint up to the job you got it for.
I advocate you spend all the money you can on your instrument.

I do not like a heavy detector I have sold many good detectors because of this (CZ 5 comes to mind first) the Eagle was alittle heavy but not heavy enough to bother me, balanced quite well I might add. I didn't like the stock coil (950) at all but really liked the 5.3 coil.
For the type of hunting that I do, school grounds/tot lots for coins $ jewelry the Cutlass II uMax will do just fine actually better than alot of other high $$$ brands/models. I had a Cutlass II uMax before and know that for a fact.
Let me put you on the spot Dave about your - I would have gotten more detector for my money, though, if it were me comment. I got the Cutlass II uMax which looks as nice as it did it the day it came from the factory for $150.00 delivered. Lets say we multiply the price I paid for the Cutlass by 3 which is $450.00 Tell me what $450.00 detector can do more/find more than my Cutlass. #1. The only thing I can think of is having a manual ground balance model ( not a big deal as I have no problems changing a preset g.b. Tesoro setting by turning the g.b. pot.). #2. Have a multi-tone detector, not for me don't like them at all. #3. Having a pinpoint button, nice but not needed on a Tesoro. The only thing I can think of that I would like that my Cutlass doesn't have is a threshold sound in all metal. I am busy up here doing the haying and haven't had a chance to use the Cutlass but my wife had it out today at a ball field that we have pounded for years and she got just shy of $5.00 in clad coins, not bad I say. Thanks! Steve.
Know what you mean, Steve. When most of the square tabs today mimic a nickel, and a tab could be a ring, and a larger square tab could be a key, large ring, or toy, and a piece of foil could be a small ring or gold chain-why would anyone want all that stuff? But hey, someone may catch on and find all those rings before I do-so I'm not gonna argue!

Everyone has their tastes, of course. But Ive had detectors that would shame the lower range Tesoros. Lets put ground balance and multiple tones and all the other things aside and strictly choose depth as our criteria. Taking just one detector, my old Garrett GTP1350, I've seen the the Tesoro Silver beaten. The Compadre is not more than these, certainly.
The Garrett would hit harder and stronger on targets of the same depth. In fact, it made the difference once between me walking on - and digging what was more than a little whimper on the Tesoro's.
I remember once, I walked over a signal because it was weak and "iffy". Right behind me came my son, with the Garrett, and "bam!" what a hit he got. He called me over and I heard it, too, locked hard on dime. When we retrieved an 1842 dime that I was leaving behind with my Tesoro, I became a believer.
Everyone is different, or course and uses what suits them. I am no way knocking the Tesoro's, so don't anyone get their rear ends all tied in a knot - I have three Tesoro's, right now.
But I learned then that while I may not NEED to spend thousands, a little more is money is often well spent. Enjoy!
I agree with that there are deeper detectors than Tesoro's but in all honesty the only detector that I had that was deeper than any of the Tesoro's I have owned was the Eagle & I have owned a much of them. Any given detector will work different better/worse in different parts of the world as all our ground is different as you all know. I know you were not knocking Tesoro's Dave, always enjoy reading your posts my friend. Steve.
Whiz kid i am with you i have used a lot of different detectors since the 70's even including compass. Some say tesoro is slack on depth. Not for me it is not.Tesoro detectors are the deepest that i have come across, not to mention the lightest, and no bells and tv screens, plus a lifetime warranty to top it off.I think they are the best detector company in the world for that!.:
