Here Come The Clones? In Both Detectors & SEF Coils!

Critterhunter

New member
Watch out for fake detectors AND even SEF coils! Somebody pointed this out in a T2. Sure looks suspicious

Critterhunter,These clones are going to be a real problem. Not good for the big metal detector companies getting blamed for poor quality and then have to sort through non customers who got one of these cheap fakes wasting their time and money. This could be self afflicted by manufacturer's using cheap Indonesia labor.HH Ron

Critter what makes it a clone versus the real thing. Isnt that site just a distributor?

I was thinking the same thing Neil. $350 for the Sovereign GT with a minimum order of 10. With the shipping and what ever import costs are a added and then the markup by the seller that price is not far off.

My thoughts too.

They're made in Malaysia. I wonder if it's across the street from Minelab or in the same building?

I don't know that they are fake for sure, hence the "?" in the subject header I posted. Haven't looked closely at the info, but it sure does look fishy at first glance. It might be just me but the display looks a little cheesy compared to known real T2's for one thing. Very superficial impression, though.

where did you read that they are made there, that is what I was looking for on the link Critter posted but it looks like this is only a distributor, not a manufacturer?

Hey Critter, Im just curious also as you are. I agree with whoever posted theres going to be alot of stuff coming from over there but it seems like minelab isnt cranking anything out yet from there.
I was talking with a friend the other night about the stuff we are all going to be reading about "the Sovs/Explorers/Etracs built in malaysia" versus the ones made in Ireland. Get ready for a lot of hype and bull..........a well, it should be entertaining at least:drinking:

I stand corrected. Maybe it was the distributor. However I really don't see the difference in a product from Malaysia or China. What's the point? Ever wonder where Malaysia is located?

Location: Southeastern Asia, peninsula bordering Thailand and northern one-third of the island of Borneo, bordering Indonesia, Brunei, and the South China Sea, south of Vietnam

Yes I do believe there are quality issues right now, at least with products coming out of china. Other than clothing, and Im not positive on that, I dont think Ive ever seen anything that was made in malaysia.

I was just doing a little early morning reading on the forums and on the etrac forum theres a recent post from a guy who says his etrac is a few months old and was made in Malaysia. He said he doesnt see any quality issues at all.

Another post on the etrac forum was someone mentioning about the CZs had a drop in quality when they went from being made in Los Banos to being made by first texas. I couldnt tell you if thats true but certainly that has circulated for awhile now on the fisher forums.

Come to think of it, other than the box, is there a location on our minelabs that tell us where they were made?

Couple of weeks ago, my mistake, a deal too good to be true.I bought a couple of T2s brand new.Only one T2 was taken out of the box to fire up, the rod assembly wouldn't go in place with out a lot of maneuvering. The small screw in the coil connector was already missing, the coil connector and box plug was very difficult to connect, the manual was in English and Arabic with the page order last to first reverse. These were problems that could be seen after 15 minutes more or less tip of the ice burg. The T2s were boxed and shipped back to the seller even as a flip I couldn't sell this junk.I have seen where the top metal detectors with the major manufactures will be produced by these Indonesia hacks. No I didn't think I was buying a knock off but with the problems I saw with the one T2 too many red flags and quality problems. At this point I would be very careful buying a new detector from a drop shipper or big box store. Ron

Ron I see you got yourself an F75? Great detector and its nice and tight, no slop in the rods at all. its not as ruggedly built as the minelabs but a lot lighter and a great hunter in the right spots:thumbup:

Remember what they said on Hill Street Blues? Everybody be careful out there:laugh:

Guys,

Living quite close to Malaysia myself.....I know first hand that a lot of electronics out of Malaysia is well regarded down here in Australia.

They have many domestic electronic products in Australia and they are high quality.

In fact, a lot of Japanese companies out source their mid to higher end products (Canon, Panasonic, Sony) to Malaysia.

Currently, Malaysia isn't like China with their mass producing of basic electronic parts where quality is questionable.

Tony.

Tony, the Japanese out source to save money.Malaysia is a third, fourth tier operation. Its great to talk to someone in India that can't speak English to help solve a problem because a company out sourced. In the US we don't regard out sourced labor a higher gain to quality. If this is the direction some of the manufacturer's take, bottom line, its going to hurt business.Whats up with the clones, why don't we just buy detectors from these rogue producer's,save money and eliminate the middle man the original manufacturer. ?? I doubt if we see any break through in new detectors with no compliance with patent laws, not a good way to do business. US consumer's get stuck enough. It is what it is,I won't buy a detector and pay top dollar from someone using the cheapest labor on the planet.

Of course they are saving money (much of Toyota is built in Thailand) but my point is I don't have a problem with their quality of electronics unlike much of the Chinese stuff.

Made in your home country...even better.

There have been some Australian companies that wouldn't exist today unless part of their operations moved offshore....rather lose 25% of the workforce instead of 100%.

Some companies will hide under this illusion but not all.

If everything can be kept local and the company can grow then that is the perfect scenario.
If corporate greed kicks in then it's all over.

Wages and standard of living is growing in much of SE Asia......are we part of that success as consumers?
Maybe their wage growth will continue to grow, possibly to the extent that it just might be be easier to have your labor component at home.....the wheel turns hopefully.

Tony.
