Here are some recent finds, From an old pre-1892 school and a local demo.

Old California

My arm has been giving me problems so my detecting time has been narrowed down to an hour at most each trip out, Still managed to get out twice this week capturing a few goodies and locating an old pre-1892 school site which should produce more finds in the future.

Using an old 1892 Atlas, Located several old school sites several of them out in the country on farm land. One of the schools "Buzzard Roost" sat on this particular corner back in 1892, How much earlier it sat there I won't know until I further research but at least it was there back in 1892 based from the County atlas.

Not allot of finds surfaced and with two hours total between the two sites it was still a nice haul, The oldest find would be the civil war era boot heel tap, The heart shaped hole on the metal object.

One Barber 1901 dime, One Good For One Cigar Token and an 187? Indian penny, Some pieces of old age indicators but for the most part nothing really old. Was hoping for a seated or two for the sites are old enough, But I'll take the fresh air and the joy of the hobby anytime.

Enclosed are a few pictures, One from the actual 1892 County Atlas of the school location and a current pic of the same site and another of the finds. The owner of the Buzzard Roost School property gave me permission to search here, So if any of the locals would like to join in and search here and a couple of others sites nearby you're welcome to join in. The owner allowed me to invite a few friends, It's one of those many school sites no one knows about unless they have an 1892 Atlas, So many of these older school sites have never been hunted.

Thanks Jeff,

You're right, These old County Atlas have a wealth of information. Even give the locations of every homestead, store, bar & other important structures from back then. Of course, it doesn't give the Lan/Lon or street/road name which is up to the person to figure out and after practice it can easily be obtained.

I use google earth to get the proper Lan/Lon or to measure from point A to point B which is the same distance on the atlas and google earth, An old Atlas is a great tool to have.

I've enclosed another same picture of the old school site only pointed out an old homestead across the road of the school house, These are the kind of sites were everything is dug, A good chance for a piece of old gold jewelry to surface. Excellent hunting grounds for the T-2.

Thanks again,
Paul (Ca)

Nice finds. We have alot of old school that now look like your image. It takes some reseach to find some of them. But, it's well worth it. I've found quite a few that seem like they've been hunted before because the 'easy pickings' are gone. But, 98% of them have given up some nice coins by just slowing down. I've found everything from lc, seated half dimes to barber quarters at those kinds of schools. Good luck on getting your arm healed.

Here's a school I found large cents, IHs, flying eagles, silver of all sorts... :)

Looks like you got a great location. Hunting the area out will take a lot of time. Your great finds would keep me going on the site for years to come!

Good luck and thanks for sharing!

Keep on sharing :)

Thanks Bill,

That looks like the same type of old school site near my friends area, Those sure do produce some good finds if ones willing to do the rersearch and detect the area.

You did good at this site of yours, If you can post some of your sites and share with others how you located them.

I think I'll do the same, It'll be nice for us to share what we've learned so others new to the hobby can easily locate some older sites of their own to share with us.

HH, Paul
