Hello forum friends,
I'm Paul (Ca) now under the forum name of "Old California," Please excuse my absence from several of the forums. I needed a break and just recently started to post again.
Joe Bolton and a couple of others have added on a GB to the Golden uMax, All apparently seem to be working well and in some areas depending on the mineralization the added on GB really helps the little Golden excel over a fixed GB.
I've completed several GB mods and below is my approach to adding on the GB to the Golden, I have another GB set-up and it too works well but this is my favorite. Rather than mount the threshold pot underneath the lower right housing at the serial number area I now prefer to mount the threshold pot in the upper left corner and place the added on GB pot in the old threshold area. The reason for mounting the GB pot to the threshold area is because the GB pot will not fit underneath the housing or in the new area the threshold pot is mounted on, Not enough room or you could easily crush a circuit component or crack a circuit board.
You'll need a 50K pot, Two strands of different colored wire. A drill, regular soldering iron & solder, heat shrink tubing and a de-soldering iron. The de-soldering iron is used to remove the solder holding the pre-set miniature GB pot attached to the circuit board., I highly recommend using this tool to remove the solder.
Please do not attempt this project if you are not familiar with electronics. Plus, You must be precise with the hole location for the threshold pot......Also, It is very possible to crush a circuit component as you are pressing the circuit board and face plate back together....Careful when tightening the face plate to the housing, The extra added on wire may crush a circuit component or crack a circuit board.
In the pictures, I used a yellow and green wire to help you determine the locations the two wires are to be soldered, two wires to the GB pot and the same two on the circuit board after removing the miniature pre-set pot on the circuit board.
Again, Please do not attempt this project unless you are very familiar with electronics and have good common sense ability of taking on such projects. ...........Although the added on GB mod is easy to apply and only takes an hour to complete, There is no room for error on this project.
In the future, I'm going to complete another GB mod on a Golden uMax, Only the next unit will have the ability of the user selecting a Manual GB or back to the stock pre-fix GB with the flip of a switch.
All the best,
Old Cal. "Paul (Ca)"
