HELP

I`m new to the hobby of MD and i hit a site that was supposed to be a homestead from 1914.Upon arriving at the site and looking it over i came to the conclusion it was a dump site. Now what i need help with is there are glass bottles all over the place and some look real old.How do i know which ones are worth picking up and which ones are junk?So in learning one hobby i think i make have found a new one lol.Is there any web sites that list bottles or is it a grab all you can carry and see if you can find some info on it or what? How do i get started?thanks Sandrailer.

Look for bottles that have raised glass letters called embossing on them. Colors of any kind is good. Air bubbles in glass, stretch marks, widdled looking, seams up the sides that don't go all the way up to the mouth(top). Pontiled on the under side of the bottom. Even newer looking sodas with acl Applied color labels painted on are keepers.
Google search old bottles or something like that and find web sites. Here are a few exaples, applied color lable soda, embossed aqua blob top soda, pontiled bottom, clear embossed, with contents still in it,a clear but embossed whisky bottle. I will send a few web site to ya when I find them. I think you need to reaserch and dont forget to dig under the pile of newer ones thats where you will find the goodies but some not so old ones can go for good $$$ you just need to find out which ones.

Hi guys, the bottles I find here in Aussieland are a bit different to yours, but as Mattockman said, look for imperfections in the glass, like stretchmarks, elongated and uneven glass bottoms, bubbles in the glass, and old pontil marks. By the way mattockman, I really like the bottom photo of the amber Blackman's bottle. Was it medicinal or tonic? I find a lot of little bottles like that, but can't always find out what the contents might have been. And your bottle looks just like some of mine, just a different brand. I recently sold a brewery bottle for $500.00 at an old bottles & collectables show, that I'd found a few years ago. It was a pale green codd, embossed wording, and fairly worn, but rare, which is why the buyer was willing to pay for it.

Golden, actually the bottle on the bottom is a clear one but the contents is still in it or they put something else in it and tossed it, so it looks amber but it is not. Contents is so thick it won't run out. Congrats on that $500 bottle....you had fun finding it and someone paid you for it.....How good is that! Win/Win!!!

I've rarely found a bottle with the contents still inside, let alone bottles with the original labels on them! I did buy one bottle recently with it's very own label on it. I have found them without labels, but this was in excellent condition, I thought. It's a Balfes Straw Hats Ink. Here are some photos of it.
