just bought my first bounty hunter quick silver, and i havent had any luck, so i put a penny and a nickle on the ground in plane view and the detector would not detect either one?

Let's try the most common.

Make absolutely sure both batteries are in properly. That the +and - are on the correct connections of "both" batteries. Just because the screen lights up doesn't mean "both" are in correctly.

Nothing is notched out accidentally, right?

Check that the coil is plugged in at the head securely. It should just slip on when the markers line up.

Check that the wire entering the coil is not loose or frayed.

Are the coins not picked up with sound and display both, or just one, sound or display.

Does the unit beep when you turn it on with the depth display on for a moment? If so, and you cannot detect, you may have a bad coil.
