What is the best way to clean coins found, and is there a way to tell if dimes are silver? I can't see the dates cause they are really tarnished or whatever. But is there a way to clean them that will not harm them just in case they might be worth 11 cents!!
Also, went hunting today for about 2 hours. 2.38 in change, an old brass hold down? from a old boat I assume, and a brass/copper? bracelet. I was feelin' good!!
Anywho... this guy came up to me and said he had been over the area I was at several times and only found junk. Hell, I thought I did o.k. for the time I was out. He then proceeded to bash my B.H.. saying things like he would never own one again and that they are for beginners, so on and so forth. I told him that I AM just a beginner and he could kiss my arse in the brown and to get the F$&# away from me. He did, most quickly I might add!!! He kinda put me in a mood, but I just kept on swingin'! Friggin' jerk-off!!
Any help with the above ?'s would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you, and my the bluebird of happiness sh!t on your birthday cake.

That's a good Question.Sorry I don't have the answer.I'm kinda new at this too.I've got about $15 in clad that need cleaning.Thought about putting them in the washing machine. Some body will come along and tell us their trade secrets............pat

There must be a way to tell if'n these here dimes are silver. Other than date. Too fouled up to read dates. Not sure what to do. Someone will come to bat here. I'll wait to see.

A bottle of Tarn-x goes a long way if you use it sparingly and can handle the occaisional foul smell from the chemical reaction. Cleans up real nice without damaging the item, in alot of cases practically restores them. Use a BH Quick Silver myself, mainly for prospecting, but occaisionally find a few "goodies" left behind somewhere upstream. Serves my needs perfectly with a good success rate. Kudos on shooting down the arrogant bystander! Guess the guy likes being alone in life, not part of this "MD brotherhood". Good hunting!

Kellyco and other companies sell coin tumblers for cleanup- $90 and up.......Tarn-x works for me.......HH

Silver normally can be spotted right away usually comes out of the ground pretty clean(at least here in Colorado). If the coin is very bad its probably clad. But once again thats here. I usually clean my silver with a baby toothbrush with some dishsoap and dont scrup hard at all. The clad gets put into a small rock tumbler with sand, white vineger, lemon juice, and dish soap and gets tumbled for about an hour. Usually cleans up good enough for banks to take them. DO NOT MIX YOUR PENNIES WITH YOUR OTHER CLAD when tumbling or the silver colored clad will turn pink in color. I tried electrolysis once with not much luck, it destroid a couple wheat pennies I tried it on. I may have done it wrong though. Gray Ghost had some postings about it with good reports though. Heard that some museums clean theres buy useing ice. Concept is to freeze coin in water over and over and keep repeating until it cleans to your satisfaction. Haven't tried this method yet. The rule is normally not clean any coin of value

I also use a tumbler with (Plane) Aquarium Gravel And detergent, tumbler for about 24 to 36 hours , an the coins look good, And as Pack Rat stated don't do silver clad, an penny's at the same time

Also harbor fright stores here,, had their tumblers on sale here last week a single 3 # was $ 21.95 an a double was $32.95 very good buy
