help with tips for digging packed down lake swimming area

I've been hunting for 3 weeks in a local lake & I've already had some good finds, but I'm having trouble digging in the areas where there are lots of swimmers. These areas are lightly covered with sand, but hard as a brick. Any help will be greatly appreciated! ~ Anthony:twodetecting:

I have worked places in Lake Washington in WA state that have a rock-solid clay bottom that is sometimes only a few inches under what ever is on top of it. I dive and fan for the targets, also have a scraper to move more materiel when necessary, and I can say I have never found any target, nor heard any target beneath that solid clay. It may be different where you are working, but maybe that is sort of a blessing in disguise as nothing is probably beneath it. At least nothing that has fallen in the last hundred years.IF you think differently, it may be necessary to dive for the target to be able to see what is happening. I know if I hadn't been able to see what I was doing, I would have thought my problem was not digging deeple enough. There's no way coins or jewels could be under that clay layer. My two cents worth. I would think if the bottom is that hard there would not be many deep targets. You can try to sharpen the leading edge of your scoop and wiggle it as you dig, but it sounds like most of your targets will be in the sand lawyer. Good Luck. HH

Thank you for your helpful response. After considering what I've been going through and reading what you said, it makes a lot of sense! I'm going back Mon. & I feel smarter than I did last weekend! LOL & HH!!!

Thanks for your help! Even though I'm not new to detecting, I'm only about 4 wks. old to water detecting. I've read quite a few of your posts (PaPa Joe) & the difference in me & you is I would run from the alligators & the snakes  . Thankfully I've not had to run from either so far & I hope it stays that way!! Thanks a lot!!! LOL & HH!!
