Help with settings for a particular site...

I was at a park out of town today, nice and old. The area was fairly clear of targets, probably detected pretty regularly through the years. I was hoping for a nice old silver dime, but it was not to be. I dug a few super deep targets... three 1919 wheaties (@#$% why couldn't one have been at least an indian?) and a round brass clock part about the diameter of a silver dollar. The clock part could have been 12". I am confident the wheats were at least 10". Plugs were the length of my Lesche digger, and required 2-4 more scoops out of the bottom of the hole to reach the target. Targets were near other items/signals, more challenging to pinpoint, which could have been the reason for the unclear IDs and the reason someone else had not dug them. I find the Explorer's separation abilities are excellent, so separating the targets can at times be work, but can be done.

None of these targets were clear repeatable, but they were deep and bounced around enough in the "right" areas of the smartfind screen, so I opted to dig. I am using the Pro coil. Deep on, fast off. Sens 29. Right side of the smartfind screen wide open. The copper/brass objects were especially green/corroded, some shallower wheats and clad dimes had turned orange - so the soil is corrosive (whatever that means for soil conditions). I imagine if silver were there, even at the depth of the 1919 wheats, it would have still given a good enough signal that I would have dug. The clear/clean nature of the site helps too, not much distraction from tons of shallow junk/modern coins. I feel confident if it is there and it passes under the coil, I will find it, but I wonder if there is anything I can/should tweak to get the best out of this site.

If you were faced with this site, what settings would you change or tweak to maximize the potential of old silver from this site?

You didn't mention your iron mask setting, 29 would be high on sens in my area, I usually run 25 to 27 man.
On the iron mask setting, I would run it -14 or -13 (XS) and take chances on some one angle hits, at least those that sound better. You will dig some bent nails doing this but you may dig a deep dime also.
Listen for those weak high pitched signals that are a little more than an iron chirp, that is if you use conduct sounds. I use audio 1 but in the minority but I think it helps me pick out those deep ones.
Slow down the sweep speed in the hot spots and check out the signals carefully.
There is the possibility there are no dimes there but I would think there are at least a few since you are digging wheaties.
Hope this helps.

If you can, run in smart screen fully open, and dig all but far left solid iron, specialy crown caps also, the ones that ride up and down the right side of the line of the screen....make sure you have a good set of head phones and also you never mentioned gain setting.....be at least 8 gain....and or higher if it sounds stable enough to ID targets....I have found my XS is a little weak on dimes and may look like a crown cap....about half way up right side....it sounds like your on the right track though.....if there is a dime within reach you should hear it.....some times a diff. day, or a diff. hour or a diff, angle direction will help.Good coil control and proper sweep speed...and a good noise cancel or frequency change would be better....Good luck.

A lot has to do with your ground, your sweep speed, hearing abilities, headphones and just personal preferences..The next time you get a deep hit change some of your settings...might be surprised at what you will find depthwise( yep lift your coil higher to see if it will go deeper) and pay attention to the audio responces you get..Am sure settings from experienced Explorer users may help but that time experimenting may pay dividends and make you more adept at maxing the Explorer...

You might try griding the area as well. When you find a deep target thats the time to do your adjustments. Ive noticed on deep silver threshold tone makes a difference in what and how you hear deep coins. Everyone hears differently and sometimes if you arent set correctly you will hear some coins... others just become a part of the background. Cond sounds do give a better seperation tone between a dime and penny to me.
