help with pinpointing

I use a Pioneer 505. I'm having trouble pinpointing my targets. The machine uses an all metal mode as its pinpointing device. It doesn't seem very accurate. Or maybe it's me, althought I've worked with it for many hours. Advice please: Do I need a new machine, or do I need to keep on plugging with the Pioneer. It's getting very frustrating. Thank you.

have you thought about a probe?i have just brought minelab quattro, and i am have probs pinpointing,i brought a probe, which as helped me

Hi Kathy i had problems at the start too heres what i did
to my MPx metal detector since it to has a Concentric
Black coil i headed off to Wal-Mart and purchased a
SILVER Sharpie marker to put some reference marks
on my coil after completeing that i dug out my HOT MELT
glue gun and glued 2 pieces of cotton twine extending 1/2"
past the open hole in the center of the coil so when you
look down at the open hole in the center of the coil you will
see the X there, once that had been finished i took a
1' X 1' piece of cardboard and duck taped a coin onto it
then gave it a spin so you had now idea where the coin was
located on the card board (DO NOT TAPE IT TO THE CENTER)
coin is located under the card board, when the metal detector
DINGS take a blk magic maker and place a mark on the
card board then move your body 90 degrees from the previous
location you were standing in then try to locte the coin again
and place a second markon the card board then draw an
intersecting imaginary line from both mark and where they cross
thats where the coin should be. I will let you know it takes
PRACTICE because the color of the card board is consistent
its not like looking at the ground where you could pick out a
reference point like some dead grass which might be next
to where you would possibly get a tone hit from your metal
detector going off. If you can master this task you'll be well
on your way to finding Jewlrey, coins and relics.

Sincerely

Have you tried this? Lay several coins and pieces of trash on top of the ground several feet apart from each other in a spot that has no trash under it. Practice going over each coin and piece of trash at different speeds and different heights and see where the targets are being detected under your coil. If the items are under the same spot consistantly you will know where to dig.

Hi! I hadn't checked back for responses, but when I did !!!! ...... What a wealth of information. I really appreciate the time you've taken to help a new person. I'm going to try all of your suggestions. Yes, 1945 is my birthdate, so that makes me 62, but I look - scratch that - FEEL like 18. And that's what counts. Thanks a lot for your posts, and happy hunting!!!

I also use a BH- 505 best way for me to learn the machine has been to bury so different coins a couple of nails
and some al-foil in the back yard

I used a long screw driver so as not to disturb the ground to much and dropped the items in and closed the hole
Then using the dics. mode to find my items and watching the read out for response and then using the all metal
to pinpoint seemed to help me... that way I know what I am looking at -- then I keep doing it over and over till I feel
good with the machine

it helps me - hope it helps you also

The coin on the cardboard is an excellent idea and as someone suggested you can calibrate how you respond by learning where the true pinpoint location is relative to the center of your coil.

Tape some coins to the back of a big piece of cardboard ( lay it down where there is no metal under it ) then locate the coins and pinpoint them. Use a sharp object to probe through the cardboard to see if you hit the target. You need to find the sweet spot on your coil where the target will be under when you pinpoint.

That's great stuff, guys, and I'm trying all of it. I still get quite large centers to my X, and when I use all metal no motion pinpoint mode, I sometimes lose targets as if they were never there to begin with. Thanks for all your help.
